MommyMaestra gives us another great resource for kids!
By now, I'm sure you've heard that Celia Cruz will join Latinas, Jovita Idar and Nina Otero-Warren, and be recognized by the U.S. Mint with her face on a U.S. quarter.
Did you also know that she'll be the first Afro-Latina to be featured on a quarter? Each year, four coins are released as part of the American Women Quarters Program. This year, Jovita was honored, and last year, Nina was featured.
Did you know that the Cuban "Queen of Salsa" Celia Cruz, originally planned to become a literature teacher? Celia’s dad wanted her to become a school teacher, but she loved singing and music. So after high school, Celia went to Cuba’s National Music Conservatory, a type of school for musicians. There she studied piano, voice, and musical theory.
When she was 25 years old, Celia got a job singing for the most popular band in Cuba, La Sonora Matancera.
She left Cuba in 1960 and came to live in the United States. People loved her beautiful voice, style of music (called salsa), and the dazzling costumes she wore. Celia also became famous for the way she ended her shows - with a hearty shout of “Azúcar!” which means sugar in Spanish.
If you are looking for reading passages, lesson plans, activities, books, or videos to teach your children or students about the singer, check out my post!
