1 IN : 1 OUT
In an effort to keep my bookshelves manageable, I’ve instituted a 1 in : 1 out policy that for every piece of bookmail I receive, at least one book must leave my collection.
NOTE: I have way more books than you see on my Latinx shelves, so I am trying to address what my husband calls “a problem” and I call “a home library.”
So what is 1 in : 1 out, exactly? I all my weekly for you and then give you a rapid fire rundown of the new books I am adding to my Pango shelves for sale. It’s chaotic and you get to be as nervous about me using scissors than I am using them.
I’ve been posting these videos on Tik Tok for a couple months now, but have been remiss to post them here because the videos tend to be long. For example, the one I posted today was over 10 minutes 😳
I’m actually thinking about beginning to post these on my long-abandoned YouTube channel instead and plan to make that change soon—maybe with my next video? 🤞🏼
I’ll post my most recent video in stories if you want a preview of everything I just posted on Pango, but I have over 150 books currently listed, so definitely check out my shelves for more!
PS, if you’re new to Pango and want to make a purchase, use my affiliate link and code TOMESANDTEXTILES for $5 off your first purchase.

LATINX 365
I thought I would wind down one of my personal worst Latinx Heritage Months (made it through Helene, barely held on through Milton while grieving my Laka Bear all the while) with a walk down memory lane at previous year’s LHM posts from 2018-2023.
I was thinking as I was choosing the photos I would use that during all these years, I (and so, so, so many Latinx creators) have been working to promote Latinx books and yet we STILL only represent 6% of traditionally published books. The needle hasn’t moved one millimeter.
We only get a month with a spotlight and while I love the celebration, I resent its brevity and everyone’s short attention span with our books. Remember us tomorrow, a month from now and every day after that. Our stories are here and they are MORE than our pain and struggle.
And please do not get me started on the return of Jeanine Cummings and the slap in the face that cover reveal was during OUR month.
I am working through tremendous feelings right now, so will be taking a little break because I am not done with any of this, I just need a break.
Love and appreciate you all so much. Thank you for being here for this ride.
PS—while I am on a temporary reprieve, my bookshelves are not! All the links in my bio work for all your Latinx book needs.

This post is for those that asked if they can do anything for me. Right now, the answer is no, but as a full-time content creator, my income may be affected if the storm damages my home. Making a small commission on these book sales helps and after the storm, I will funnel some of the funds into local mutual aid.
So thankful for all of you 💖

“The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever.” — Sonya Sotomayor
The most important order of business today is to wish a feliz Dia de la Independencia to my Costa Rican, El Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Honduran and Nicaraguense friends!
I begin most Latinx Heritage Months with Sonya’s quote, one of my favorites, because it signifies to me what drives me to continue to do the work despite Latinx books only representing 6% of traditionally published books. Latinx books are constantly missed in roundups (it’s SO rare to see ANY of my New Latinx Book Tuesday Books on many weekly roundups) and that is more than likely due to the fact that they’re not given budgets by their publishers, who are the major drivers for sales of books despite the pressure they now put on authors to go viral, have large followings, etc. It’s a dereliction of duty to marginalized authors.
Lately, I find it hard not to feel disheartened by it all, so I keep my head down and continue forward promoting Latinx books because if not us, then who? Is it a way to be popular? Absolutely not. Is it the most rewarding work of my life? Absolutely.
Today signifies the turning of the magnifying glass on Latinx creators and authors. Did you forget? Are you just beginning your outreach now? Reminder that exposure isn’t always sufficient payment when schedules are busy and demand is high. Being reached out to this late honestly feels like a slap in the face when we’ve been here reminding you to now wait until the last minute for months. WE ARE NOT YOUR LATINX GOOGLE (in this or any month). Our existing work is sitting patiently out there waiting to be discovered. If you’re going to reach out anyway, please provide a budget.
The people who get to make requests from me this month? My patreon supporters.

ONE MONTH TO LATINX HERITAGE MONTH TRANSPARENCY POST
As many of you know, I became a full-time content creator last summer. I had to transition my business for a year, but now that I’m done with that, I’m a full-time creator. Nothing has changed, except I’ve put my small business owner hat on in a different way: how to continue to create content in a way that allows me to make a living. Having worked in accounting my entire adult life, it’s so scary to now be a creative, but also so thrillling. So, yes, you may see shifts in what I do and how I do it, but loving books is still at the center of what I do.
One of the early learning lessons is that I can’t rely on publishing for full-time income. I have to make a path forward for myself and my family that is sustainable. What does that mean? Different spaces will account for different parts of content and that may shift based on variables. All that being said, I wanted to share with you how I make income and the different spaces I exist online since I’m not just a anymore:
Sponsored content: I understand that this is not something most of you can’t offer (unless you’re a social media manager looking for Latinx booknerds who love fashion, wine, skin care, dogs, and art, then HEY!), but I AM measured on when seeking paid promotional content are my stats. Engaging, liking, sharing, saving, reposting, especially anything I mark as “Paid sponsorship”, helps me secure brand deals in the future.
Patreon: As a full-time content creator in the midst of a major personal financial shift, I began a Patreon a few months ago as a way to stabilize my income. Right now, the perks are access full New Latinx Book Release Tuesday (including book cover, genre, and a small note to why I added the book to my list)—paid subscribers get the list early and free subscribers receive the list the following Monday—and access to my Discord Book Club!!
Substack: I will be launching my monthly newsletter on September 15th. It will be a sort of reading diary, as well as a roundup of some of my favorite posts around the internet. It’ll be free, but there are also monthly and annual subscriptions available. CONTINUED ⬇️
