We don't normally run a post more than once, but we want to make sure that we get the word out about possible financial help post Milton, so here this is again:

We are very fortunate that our studio and staff came through the recent storms unharmed. We know that many of you in our area were not so lucky. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through what promises to be a long recovery process.

If you are in the music business and have lost equipment, housing, gigs, etc. from the storms PLEASE READ THIS POST!!!

The Grammy organization has a charitable foundation called MusiCares. They are offering assistance to those members of the music community in need after hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated so much our area. To qualify you do need to be able to show proof of at least 5 or more years of paid professional experience in the music industry AND/OR at least 6 commercially released singles and/or music videos.

We contacted MusiCares to find out what you can do to apply for help. This was their response:

Thanks to all the fans that bought our limited-edition Death Metal Tour T-shirt, we were able to fund the Historical Marker that Hillsborough County will be placing at the site of our previous studio! We are forever grateful for your support!

We’ve had some requests for a hoodie version, so we are adding one to the Merch page: Go to Morrisound.com and click on the “Merch” tab.

We’ve also had requests for merch with our current logo instead of the vintage tape reel. Those will be coming soon!

The response from the announcement that Morrisound Recording has been approved for a historical marker has been overwhelming! It has far exceeded our expectations. A heartfelt THANK YOU!!! to everyone that has commented on or liked our previous post and especially to those that have already purchased a T-shirt to help us pay the cost of the marker. We are more than halfway to our goal after just 3 days!!

We are pleased to announce that Hillsborough County has awarded Morrisound Recording, Inc. a Historical Marker to honor the contributions that were made to the music industry by Morrisound and its staff, especially in the field of extreme metal production. The marker will be placed at the site of our earlier studios on 56th St. in Temple Terrace, the site of some of the most well-known extreme metal recordings during the 1980’s and 90’s. The photo below shows our staff in 1992, which includes nearly everyone that worked on those records.

To celebrate this recognition, we have designed a special T-shirt featuring our vintage logo from the 1980’s and 90’s across the front, and on the back, a tour-style listing of the top 20 all-time best selling* Death Metal albums produced at Morrisound Recording. This limited-edition T-shirt is available only through our web site – www.Morrisound.com. Click on the “Merch” tab. Proceeds from the sale of this shirt will go toward the cost of the Historic Marker Plaque.

* These 20 albums are from the top selling 23 Death Metal albums of all time based on data from Soundscan.

The world lost an amazing talent yesterday when Jeff Beck died from a bacterial meningitis infection. Jeff’s mastery of the guitar was nothing short of genius. Watching him play was like watching a high wire performer – he took his solos right up to edge, and with the wire swaying, confidently brought it under his control. His ability to wring emotion from his instrument was inspirational. Rolling Stone magazine says that he didn’t have a “signature” song, but for those who remember 1975s release of Blow by Blow, “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers” is it. If you can listen to that without getting a least a little choked up you should question your humanity.

I never had a chance to meet Jeff, but through his music I feel as if we were friends. I will miss him. I know my brother feels the same - Tom.

With a major hurricane bearing down on the west coast of Florida this week, we wanted to extend our heartfelt wishes that everyone in Ian’s path stay safe!

Due to the current emergency situation, we will be extending the deadline to make your deposit on our End of Summer promotion, as long as you inform us of your intentions before October 1st. We have some exciting news to announce - we recently completed the installation of a Dolby Atmos mixing system in our studio! Now that immersive audio is available on Apple Music, Tidal and Amazon HD streaming services for users with enabled headphones, earbuds or home theaters, we felt it was time to be able to offer artists the opportunity to mix their music in an immersive audio format. We recently completed our first Atmos project with a good friend of ours, Eric Schilling, at the helm. Eric took home a Grammy award this year for “Best Immersive Audio Album” for his work on “Alicia” by Alicia Keys. We were thrilled to have him work with us.

In other news, we will be announcing new studio rates in the near future. Our current rates are essentially the same as what we were charging in the 1990’s. While our costs have gone up significantly in that time, we have been able to avoid raising our rates for many years. Unfortunately, that time is over. We will be making a formal announcement with an offer to reserve our current rate for a limited time. If you may be planning to record, mix or master in the near future stay tuned so you can lock in the lower rate for your project.

Brian Loyd mixing for a new progressive metal release with Jim Morris at Morrisound Recording. Brian is in the final stages of the new project, having been one of the first artists to begin tracking at Morrisound’s new Tampa facility back in 2018- beginning even before the full construction was finished (check out the photos). Delayed by a large slate of other work, and a bit of a Pandemic, it is all coming together nicely! Coincidentally, this marks 20 years since Brian and Jim started working together🤘

Sharing some recent thoughts on mic shootouts from the (alleged) mind of Jim:

“One procedure we find very useful in the recording process is microphone selection. Choosing the best microphone for a particular application can be a valuable contribution to the sound quality and effectiveness of any recording.

In these pictures, you can see how we ran a recent ‘shootout’ on vocals with Danny Langfield from the band Pinball Hustlers using a Mojave MA-300, a Neumann U-87, an Audio-Technica AT5047, and a vintage Neumann U-47 (seen in pics ordered from brick wall to booth door).

We look for a) what the singer feels the best performing on and b) which microphone’s characteristics bring out the most desirable qualities in a singer’s voice.

When “shooting out” mic selections, don’t forget to match the mic preamp. When I do this, I make sure to use identical preamps for each mic. This requires, of course, that you have a sufficient number of identical mic preamps, like the ones seen in the picture.”
