The Celebrity Tour Guide for the July Tacoma ART BUS Tour is Senator Yasmin Trudeau!

MEET YASMIN TRUDEAU:

Senator Trudeau identifies as a mixed-race Bangali American, woman of color and is proud of her immigrant and American blended roots. She is also the first Muslim-American to serve in the Washington state Legislature and the first WA state legislator to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. She credits her lived experience as the motivation for her advocacy and her professional experience as the tools she has acquired to advocate effectively for her community.

She is the product of hope and tenacity, despite growing up in poverty and navigating state systems, like foster care and DSHS. Her own mother never had the opportunity to learn how to read or write and this motivated her path to college despite experiencing homelessness during her teenage years. She credits the support she received from the community during critical times in her life, her mother’s incredible grit, despite all odds, and her connection to her faith/values as the motivation for her career in public service.

Senator Trudeau has served as state Senator for the 27th Legislative District since being unanimously appointed by the Pierce County Council in 2021 and then elected by the voters in 2022. During her time, she has focused her efforts on supporting sustainable solutions to our homelessness crisis, increasing housing supply, and directly addressing the housing affordability crisis by stabilizing the rental market. She has also prioritized holding criminal polluters accountable, ensuring that we have fair economic markets for small businesses, investing in breaking cycles of generational poverty, tackling critical workforce challenges, building out our mental and behavioral health systems, and expanding first time homeownership opportunities as one of the lead negotiators of the state’s Capital (infrastructure) budget.

Prior to her current role, her professional advocacy included serving as the Legislative Director for Attorney General Bob Ferguson, requesting and passing legislation to prevent gun violence, stop the overprescribing of opiates, increase use of prescription monitoring program and establish strong domestic worker protections. She worked to pass legislation to prohibit youth solitary confinement, increase consumer and student loan protections, close wage theft loopholes, address unfair debt collection practices, and increase the efficacy of our state’s Medicaid Fraud Program. As the Attorney General’s Tribal Affairs Manager, she helped to implement historical policy to establish a more transparent and collaborative relationship between sovereign Tribal Governments and the State’s attorneys.

Trudeau has also served as Tribal Affairs Manager for Washington State for the Washington state Attorney General's Office, Staff Counsel for the Senate Democratic Caucus, and Legislative Assistant to now Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal. Senator Trudeau is a licensed attorney and currently lives in Central Tacoma with her husband, 5 year old son, 2 year old daughter and their cat, Jinx.

Several small businesses in downtown Tacoma have been significantly impacted by an ongoing power outage caused by a fatal traffic accident near the University of Washington Tacoma (UWT) campus. On July 6, 2024, a car crashed into an electrical box near South 21st Street and Pacific Avenue, completely demolishing it and resulting in a campus-wide power outage.

The power outage has forced the UWT campus to suspend in-person classes and operations for the week. Emergency generators are currently being used for critical functions such as fire alarms and laboratories on campus, but the surrounding businesses are left to manage on their own. These businesses have been informed that power will not be restored until July 20th.

Among the affected businesses are Water from Wine, Stocklist Goods, Channing Baby & Co., Onimi Sportswear, and Tinkertopia. In an effort to mitigate their losses, these businesses are participating in a sidewalk sale today.

City Council member Sarah Rumbaugh addressed the issue at the 6th Ave Business District General meeting, asking everyone to help support these businesses while she and the city council work on finding financial relief for the impacted businesses.

The crash has been under investigation by the Tacoma Police Department, and efforts to restore power are ongoing in collaboration with Tacoma Public Utilities.

Can’t attend the sidewalk sale in-person? Online shopping is another great and easy way to support these businesses during this time.

Did someone say brunch? Here is a yummy option for your Sunday!

Update! Thank you to everyone who came out to support us on Sunday. What a great turn out!

A few asked what this delicious brunch meal is.. it is Chicken & Waffle. It is not a traditional waffle, but one that is made in a cast iron with an amazing crispy texture. Come by this Sunday to try it! 🤤🤩

We LOVE Brunch here at 1022. Unfortunately due to the low demand we are considering stopping our brunch service.
We will be open for brunch on Sundays 10:00 - 2:00 through the end of July, if the demand picks up we would love to continue doing it. If not we will stop brunch service in August.
Thank you all for understanding.
All other hours will remain the same, including the NEW Lunch hours Wednesday - Friday 11:00am starting on July 10th.

Please note, step placement is at the discretion of the hiring authority and is subject to change at any time.

A Police Officer is responsible for crime prevention, criminal apprehension, and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances. This is general duty and investigatory police work involving the protection of life, property, and preservation of the peace. Work involves an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without direct supervision. Physical requirements include above-average physical endurance in running, climbing, and lifting as well as good balance, hearing, and vision.

City of Tacoma Recruitment

The City of Tacoma wants to employ a workforce that reflects the community we serve. We actively work to eliminate racial and other disparities and we welcome candidates with diverse and/or multicultural skill sets and personal experiences. Our goal is for Tacoma to be an inclusive and equitable place to live, work, and play.

The Tacoma Police Department is a proud participant in Transforming Tacoma; actively working to develop pragmatic, specific recommendations and reforms that the Tacoma Police Department and the City of Tacoma can implement to strengthen the Tacoma Police Department’s relationship with Tacoma’s community; ensure that the Tacoma Police Department’s activities and operations are safe, just, effective, lawful, and consistent with national, best, emerging, and transformational practices. For more information about this effort, please visit the Transforming Tacoma website.

As a community, and as a nation, we are living in historic times. One often hears that "transformation" is needed. But what does that really mean? At the City of Tacoma, when we say that, we are talking about "systemic transformation".
