Rest in peace, Walt. The Syracuse New Times would not have been what it was without your hard work and dedication to local journalism.

In Memoriam: Walter Shepperd — With great sadness, we share news of the passing of activist, poet, journalist, and Media Unit Executive Director Walt Shepperd due to complications related to a stroke at 4:19 p.m. today. His daughter, Lorca, was at his side during his final hours. She gave permission to share the news with former Unit members and community. The family is still making funeral arrangements; we will share information as it's made available.

Bringing local love to CNY, always.

The Syracuse New Times came from humble beginnings inside the apartment of a college student in the late 1960s. On Feb. 4, 1969, our first issue was published by 21-year-old Syracuse University senior Ken Simon in his apartment at 200 Euclid Ave. Simon admitted in a 2009 interview with the Syracuse New Times that he had no real plan for how it was going to work and an initial budget of only $50 for business cards.

Simon said there were a few times during his 11 years leading the publication when he worried his project would not make it. Yet with a passionate staff, loyalty from the community and a scrappy “do or die” attitude, the Syracuse New Times lived on. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019, the paper is the second-oldest alternative weekly newspaper in the United States.

The Syracuse New Times is now an award-winning publication, running more than 50 issues per year on top of special seasonal editions and several supplemental guides. We serve a five-county area in Central New York and pride ourselves on being locally owned and operated, with our current office on Syracuse’s West Side.

Every week, we serve up snappy content on arts, entertainment, dining, community events and more, making us the go-to place to decide what to do with your disposable time and income. We are dedicated to our readers and to the Salt City, striving to create reliable content that both exemplifies the best of our area and keeps those in power in check.
