While walking east of Swope Hall, south of the admissions office, the absence of a particular tree may be noticeable to some. This tree was not simply any old tree; it held special significance to many.
The Tree of Life was planted on October 15, 1969, during the Vietnam Moratorium, a nationwide protest movement.

High schools have had to remove books from their shelves, curriculums have been under fire, and even public universities like the University of Iowa have had to limit diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. This all comes as part of a nation-wide movement to control what is appropriate content in education. While Buena Vista is a private school, this movement still has staff and educators worried.

"On Feb. 2, 2023, I came face to face with a label I had resisted throughout my collegiate career.
The conclusion of the Iowa College Media Association’s award ceremony traditionally culminates by naming the Pat Pisarik Student Journalist of the Year. That night was no different. I knew I had been selected as a finalist for the distinguished award and I was already grateful for being considered among the best collegiate storytellers across the state of Iowa. As the speaker outlined the qualities of the selected award winner, the room seemed to fade away. My leg began to bounce. My heart fluttered as I made eye contact with my professor, Dr. Andrea Frantz, who reached out and grabbed my hand. The comfort in that hand symbolized the guiding principles she had helped instill in me throughout my college career to that point. Those principles were grounded in core journalistic values."

"The decline in trust in the media is a big topic with significant implications. That loss of trust is even more dire for small, local news outlets. I thought that such a big problem required the input of a big name in the journalism world. Art Cullen is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist from right here in Storm Lake. He is the editor and publisher of the Storm Lake Times which he runs with his brother, John. He is the author of "Storm Lake: A Chronicle of Change, Resilience, and Hope from a Heartland Newspaper" and the focus of the documentary used as instructional tool across the country, "Storm Lake.""

"There are no breaking news articles about how many people experience pain after a knee-replacement surgery. Newsrooms aren’t rushing to report that C-sections can cause painful s*x. However, a Daily Mail headline this summer announced that 81% of individuals receiving gender-affirming surgery experienced pain in the weeks or months afterwards. Considering that these procedures involve incisions and stitches, it should seem like a given that there would be a recovery period. And, yes, some pain. However, this statistic isolates and alienates gender-affirming surgeries, taking advantage of the general statistical illiteracy of the public."
