The shuttered Oakmoore Golf Course in Stockton edged closer to becoming a “safe camping” zone for unhoused people as the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to proceed with its purchase.

With one member abstaining to avoid a conflict of interest, four of five supervisors authorized the purchase of the golf course, which is part of two Wilson Way parcels totaling 62 acres the county will buy for $9.6 million.

The vote came after hearing comments from residents, business operators and social workers. Some expressed concern and frustration there hasn’t been direct communication about the project. although the board discussed the proposal at its Nov. 12 meeting. Others said a safe camping area is needed.

Board members emphasized that Tuesday’s vote concerned only the purchase of the property and did not finalize its use as a public campground. That could come later.

Thaddeus Smith III, a Stockton native and proud graduate of the Stockton Unified School District (SUSD), is running to represent Area 4 on the Stockton Unified School District Board of Education. A former Edison High School student and inaugural student at Commodore, Smith’s ties to the community run deep, motivating him to improve the district for future generations.

Smith brings a track record of community leadership to his candidacy. Recently serving as the chair of SUSD’s African American Black Parent Advisory Committee, he focused on fostering parental engagement and holding district officials accountable. Through this role, he gained firsthand experience in advocating for quality and culturally inclusive education, something he intends to prioritize if elected. “I am running to restore accountability and trust within our district,” Smith explained, adding that he aims to affirm cultural diversity, inspire parental engagement, and create more educational opportunities for every student in SUSD. After more than a decade of being closed, Stockton’s Victory Park Pool is finally slated to reopen in less than a year. City leaders and community members gathered Wednesday evening to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new pool at 1001 Pershing Avenue, marking the return of a beloved neighborhood fixture.

The original pool, which opened in the late 1940s, was closed in 2013 due to maintenance issues that were deemed beyond repair. Since then, local advocates have pushed for its revival, and now, after years of effort, the project is officially underway.

The new pool, scheduled to open in late summer 2025, will feature a 75-foot swimming pool, a splash pad, ADA-compliant amenities, and updated facilities including new restrooms, a mechanical building, and staff parking. The project, which comes with a $10.2 million price tag, is funded by a combination of city and state resources, including $6 million from Stockton’s Measure M, $2.7 million from California State Parks, $1.1 million from the City Council, and $500,000 secured by State Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman.

Stockton is taking a major step in flood protection with the completion of the $96 million Smith Canal Gate Project. This state-of-the-art floodgate is the first of its kind west of the Mississippi and promises to offer enhanced flood protection to thousands of residents and property owners in central Stockton, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas.

The floodgate, which was celebrated during a ribbon-cutting event on Wednesday, will provide significant relief to approximately 8,500 properties currently located in a high-risk flood zone. One of the most immediate benefits of the project is the elimination of costly mandatory flood insurance, which has burdened homeowners in the area for years. According to project construction manager Christopher Neudeck, flood insurance premiums ranged from $1,300 to $4,000 annually. “By putting that gate in place, the mandatory flood insurance will go away,” Neudeck said.

10/24/2024

This November, Stockton residents will vote on Measure N, a proposal that could change how the city manages contract negotiations with police officers and firefighters. If approved, the measure would create a three-person independent panel to step in when the city and unions reach an impasse in negotiations.

Supporters of the measure, including the police and firefighter unions, argue that it could help address ongoing staffing shortages. Chris Sherman, Vice President of the Stockton Police Association, noted concerns about crime and recruitment challenges, stating, “We’re only averaging about 13 officers per shift for the entire city.” Mario Gardea, President of Firefighters Local 456, highlighted the department’s aging workforce, with many nearing retirement.

The decision now rests with Stockton voters, as they weigh the potential benefits of the measure against concerns over the city’s financial stability. Stay tuned for more on the upcoming election.

Stockton native Gabriel Flores Jr. continues to make waves in the boxing world, securing his third victory of 2024 and extending his impressive win streak. Flores triumphed in a unanimous decision over Dennis Contreras in the main event at Stockton’s Adventist Health Arena, a Halloween-themed spectacle that captivated his hometown fans. With scores of 80-72, 80-72, and 79-73, Flores’ record now stands at 25-2 (8 KOs), solidifying his position as one of boxing’s rising stars.

The atmosphere inside the arena was electric, with Flores making a show-stopping entrance complete with stilt walkers, fire breathers, and contortionists dressed as zombie cheerleaders. This wasn’t just another fight for Flores—it was a chance to showcase his talent in front of his home crowd and continue building his brand as both a fighter and a local icon.
