One thing that has never sat well with me is asking another adult if I can do something… I thought once you became an adult you didn’t have to ask permission to live your life. Sure there are certain obvious things but asking if I can spend time with my kids shouldn’t be one. When I worked for other companies I had to ask if I could stay home with my sick child or even if I could use the restroom. I didn’t like being told what to do as a kid so I definitely didn’t like it as an adult. As I mentioned in my last video one of the final straws for me was when a hurricane was expected to directly hit us in less than 24 hours and my boss wouldn’t let me leave. For the past 5 years I haven’t had to ask anyone if I can stay home with my sick kid, if I can take off to go watch her game, if I can run something up to the school she forgot, or even if I just felt lazy and didn’t want to do anything that day 😜 So today when we were struggling to get going this morning after getting home way too late from a softball game, I didn’t have to call and ask anyone if I could stay home with my little one because she needed to sleep in. I am my own boss and I work when it works for my family. I know what needs to be done and when I have to have it done for my business to run successfully. When a hurricane is headed your way you worry about a lot of things… But one thing I don’t have to worry about is losing my job. So the one and most important thing I can focus on is my family! 8 years ago that was a different story. Hurricane Matthew was headed our way and my boss wouldn’t let me leave. I had an hour commute in rush hour traffic to get home to my baby on a normal day. Add crazy hurricane traffic and it would be much worse. He was an older man who had no idea what it’s like being a mom and how much everyone in your family depends on you. My husband works for an oil company that supplies fuel to all the emergency service vehicles and he is in charge of transporting fuel to gas stations through FL & GA to make sure people can evacuate. So during hurricanes he is very busy! As I sat there at my desk waiting for 5 o’clock or my boss to wise up whichever came sooner…I told myself I would never work for someone else again. I had been trying for YEARS to find something that allowed me to make money while being home. Luckily I found that in 2020 and I have been my own boss ever since! So when the next several hurricanes came I never once had to worry about losing my job. Ok…I know what you are thinking… This is another “work from home scheme” and not legit. There are MANY side hustles out there and most of them are actually legit! But yes there are some that aren’t. But bookkeeping is not a scheme or even a side hustle, it’s a real position held by over 1.6 million people. I call it my side hustle because I have been able to do it online on the side while being a mom full time! Being an online business owner means I get to pick who my clients are, how many clients I have, and how much to charge my clients. I don’t work for another business that is paying me an hourly wage to do books. Since I have two children, one in every sport possible right now 😵‍💫 and a very sassy toddler, I have chosen to keep my client number low. I don’t take on any new clients and haven’t for three years. I make the ones I have my main focus and priority and it allows me to be able to put all my “work time” towards them without cutting into my “mom time” So the fact that I STILL make what I did working full time for a month teaching 13 one year olds 😵 That was a very stressful (and fun) position but it took all day everyday for me to make what I can in a week now (sometimes less than a week). And that’s in between the hustle and bustle of life! I say basic because you don’t have to be a CPA or have an accounting degree to learn the knowledge you need to do bookkeeping. You can research YouTube videos, read articles, or do an online training like I did! 2️⃣ Set up your business. You will need to establish your business by naming your business, setting up a separate business bank account and getting an LLC. I use to think of a bookkeeper as… someone who wrote a bunch of numbers in ledgers and journals. I pictured it as a boring job pushing a pencil around. I don’t even know where that came from or if it’s a stereotype everyone has about bookkeepers… But what I have found out is that being a virtual or online bookkeeper is nothing like what I imagined. A lot of times it’s like solving a mystery or a problem. You have to think outside the box on where this number might have came from, what was the client doing at the time of this purchase, and cross reference other documents. There is no pencil even involved 😆 at least not for me anyways. I use my iPad for all notes and writing on documents. I wish I would have known this sooner… Bookkeeping is a learned skill that luckily does not require any of those 5 myths! ➡️I do not have a college degree ➡️I did not have previous bookkeeping experience ➡️I learned everything I need in 45 days ➡️You don’t have to be certified ➡️You don’t need to be licensed When I got my life insurance license I had to take this intense training, I had to pay hundreds to take a test and I had to pass that test to be licensed. Then I had to take continuing education to keep my license. When I ran an in home daycare I had to pass inspections, take multiple training, get CPR certified, get licensed with the state, and take CE. So when I started looking into bookkeeping I just knew I would need to meet all these requirements or at least have a college degree. I was thrilled to learn I didn’t!! I did take a training to invest in myself that taught me all the bookkeeping skills I needed to be successful. You don’t have to take a trading or pass to become a bookkeeper but there is a test in the course I took to become certified (which again you don’t have to have) but it does give you some credibility to use while talking to your future clients! 4 reasons you are missing out if you don’t have a website or blog for your bookkeeping business! 1. Bigger audience Without some sort of online presence you are missing out on a bigger audience. The beauty of being an online bookkeeper is your clients don’t have to be local. You can reach businesses across the country giving you more opportunity to connect with your ideal client. A blog is the better way to go in my opinion because you have better odds of ranking in Google searches with more helpful content (blog posts) on your blog! 2. Weed out the “Tire Kickers” On your site you can set up “funnels” to guide your audience through that will help weed out those that aren’t serious about hiring you as a bookkeeper. You can create forms and questionnaires for them to fill out to see if they are your ideal client before even setting up a call! 3. Collect email addresses By collecting your audiences email address you get a way to stay connected with them. Help them answer some questions they may have, convert them into new clients, pitch them products, or promote add on services you offer to existing clients. The possibilities are endless! 4.
