The Pennsylvania Railroad had a full time fire department located at their larger shops. The Altoona shops (Altoona Works) had multiple fire stations due to the size and complexity of their day to day ongoing locomotive and general railroad operations.

These firefighters were full time employees of the PRR but would occasionally work side by side with the city fire department during major incidents.

Two of the former PRR fire stations are still standing in Altoona. One on Chestnut Avenue near the Juniata shops and one on 9th Avenue next to the current railroaders museum.
