Let's actually talk about camera settings and what to use when you're new.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
So, similar to how I said in the post, think of your car's dashboard, there are things you pay attention to and things you don't.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Chances are you bought this camera to record videos with and you're eager to start recording with them.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
If you've purchased a camera I've recommended, I probably have a full-length video walking you through what to change on EVERY MENU to optimize your camera for video.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Step 1: Go watch that video, do everything I say lol.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Step 2: Audio is Key⁠⁠
- Connect your microphone and do a test recording to see at the loudest and softest you will actually speak while talking, do that. 2 minutes worth of talking.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
If your audio was too loud or soft, adjust it until you get to where the audio bars on the screen are about 65% full at your loudest.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
(100% is you're seeing the audio bar go all the way to the end. That's not what we're doing.) ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Step 3: Video Settings⁠⁠
- Against my better nature, put it in auto and press record, and record your next video.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Now, why am I telling you to do auto vs set to specific settings?⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Because:⁠⁠
1) You won't remember how to change them or what to change to adjust the image.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
2) I'll explain to you exactly why and what's next in a video that's posted to my YouTube channel this week. (So Subscribe)⁠⁠

3) You need to record your next video and get past your excuses of not knowing what to do first.⁠⁠

And for some of y'all...your "what if's" aren't even beliefs you own...they're coming from someone else.

If you've been sitting on the idea of creating your first video, here's a cheat sheet for you.⁠
⁠
⚡️ The biggest thing you're going to need to do is to UNCOMPLICATE this in your mind.⁠
⁠
Sitting and thinking about "what to do" for 30-60 days and you're not taking progressive action, doesn't help you.⁠
⁠
This is where the difference between busy work and progressive work starts to be clearly identifiable.⁠
⁠
Busy work is when:⁠
- You spend all day watching YouTube videos on "what to buy"...but now it's day 30 and you're no closer to a decision than you were on day 5. ⁠
⁠
- You keep asking around for opinion after opinion waiting for responses before you make a decision.⁠
Now it's day 45.⁠
⁠
- You finally narrow down what camera (you think) and you do not need to start the process all over again because you need to decide on..what lights to get.⁠
⁠
This is a fast track to nowhere.⁠
⁠
⚡️ Pro-Tip⚡️ ⁠
If you aren't willing to start recording with your phone, you won't decide to record videos any faster when you finally decide on a camera because you'll figure "Well, I have to learn how to use it before I can make a video now."⁠
⁠.....this is NOT the way.⁠
⁠
At best, get a lapel mic from Amazon, and connect it to your phone. Set up your phone to record and record a welcome video.⁠
⁠
Video done.⁠
⁠
⚡️ Pro-Tip⚡️ ⁠
This may seem like a super small step but it's actually monumental because it forces you to remove all excuses of not knowing how to do something and move into the state I love to teach about called "better".⁠

It is FAR GREATER to be operating in a progressive state of "better" than to be in a perpetual state of "I'm about to". ⁠
⁠
Everything else after this first video is constantly in a state of getting better.⁠
⁠
This also allows you to start getting in motion and able to record your 2nd and 3rd and 4th video.⁠
⁠
And before you know it...you've been consistent all month WHILE you keep looking for a more ideal setup to match the image you see in your mind.⁠

So, you FINALLY were able to buy that DSLR or Mirrorless camera, you've watched A TON of YouTube videos on it and what all you think you need to know. You're feeling good and confident and then you remember, you need a memory card. CRAP!⁠⠀

You look on Amazon and there is a crap ton of options and for whatever reason, all the "recommended buys" on YouTube just so happen to be like $55 memory cards 😒⁠⠀

Been there before for sure!⁠⠀

SURELY there has to be some to find a decent memory card that won't be total crap and not have to spend another $200 on just one of these little buggers.⁠⠀

Truth is, there is but what you see and pay attention to in the memory isn't the part that really matters.⁠⠀

I'm sure you've asked yourself, "Just what the heck do all these numbers and symbols mean?!"⁠⠀

It's super easy once you know what to ignore and what to pay attention to on a card once you identify what parts matter and which ones don't.⁠⠀

Even if you know nothing about nothing when it comes to video, if you at least see these few marks on a card, it'll future-proof you a bit so no matter what camera you buy, your card will work for you!⁠⠀

A camera should never be your first purchase.

It's audio, lighting AND THEN your camera.

Any lighting source that's directly on you should be diffused.

My go-to setup that's worked non-stop since 2019 is the Viltriox L11t lighting kit.

- They don't take up hardly any space.
- The pop-up softbox has a slim profile but casts light evenly and is soft.
- They're usually on sale and regularly priced are still a great option.

My greatest content creator hack when it comes to cameras?

It's a 30-day challenge.

This rule is one I set up for myself to make sure I learned to use any new cameras I had.

For the next 30 days find a reason to record something every day.

These don't need to be 30-minute videos, they can be one-minute videos.

Even better, let's do a 15-second Story on Instagram using your camera.

Try it.

You'll be surprised by the results!

Getting to 7,000 subscribers can be much easier than you think.

Don't get me wrong, it will still be work, but it can be easier than how I originally did it.

Once you hit 300-500 subscribers you're really on your way.
Getting to 1,000 becomes so much easier and faster because of one thing...

Clarity.

Once you break 1,000 double down on what's working and what you're audience needs.

Don't start asking every other video, what they want to see next because they still honestly don't know and what one wants, isn't necessarily what the next 1,000 or 2,000 do.

Learn to hear the silent majority vs the loud minorities in your audience when it comes to video requests.

Look for comments that quickly post after your video goes public, what they're saying and why they said it.

Then create the next thing they need based on continually addressing their pain points.

⚡️ The bottleneck to any video creation workflow is how efficiently you can create.

The biggest challenge becomes storage of nothing else.

"How do I get audio from my Canon M50 via USB for live streaming?"⁠⠀
⁠⠀
The short answer, not possible.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Most people get this backward and get a bit confused by this because, with a clean HDMI out signal, it will send both video and audio.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
However, the Canon M50 doesn't work like that and many cameras don't. You can send the video feed via USB but not the audio.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
So, if you're wondering why you don't see "Canon M50" as a selectable audio option, you aren't doing anything wrong, but it's just not an option.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
The simplest and best audio option is a great USB-style microphone you connect to your computer if you're doing talking head-style videos.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
If you need more flexibility and maybe you're doing yoga videos, you can still connect wireless microphone setups to your computer but a small audio interface or mixer might be needed depending on what you'd like to do.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Audio can be easier to sort out than video at times, just list what you'd like to be able to do and you're usually a cable or connector away from your ideal setup.⁠⠀

The worst mistake I ever made with my audio lol Geeze!

I couldn't understand why in the world a microphone that sounded great online sounded HORRIBLE in my office.

Fast forward, the lens I was using required more space so the tripod was ACROSS THE ROOM...the microphone nestled comfortably on top lol.

If you're new to video, shotgun microphones are designed to be within a foot or so of the speaker, not a few feet. I missed that small detail.

So, when you're choosing a microphone for video, consider how you plan to use it and if it will work in your environment.

Seems like you may not need that kind of tip but if you're like I was you do lol

Here's what's wrong with, "I don't need 4k video but I want to get a camera to start making videos for my business."⁠⁠

When you're new, you really don't know what you need.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
You know what you assume you need to be the best of what you've researched and what you think you'll create...right?⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Here's how this plays out in real life.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Most people will search Facebook Marketplace or an online shop for a good, used, and cheap camera.⁠⁠
- You'll watch all the youtube videos on it⁠⁠
- You'll watch all the old ones 4-5 years old⁠⁠
- You'll even watch and find a video of "Why I still you X camera in 2021"⁠⁠
⁠⁠
When you're done researching you'll discover, "You know what this isn't bad. This is a great find!" Right?⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Wrong.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
This pattern happens when you're trying only to spend like $500 or less AND when you realize that the camera you're looking at also doesn't have competent 4k video.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
You want to buy a camera that is "as close to right" as possible. That includes having 4k videos.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
4k Video means your video quality survives the online compression on social platforms.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
It also means it can survive someone watching your video on their phone and it drops to 720p and 480p as their internet signal fluctuates.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
There are a ton of benefits to 4k video and while 1080p is still fine for now, it won't be always.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Even YouTube has changed its video quality metrics to make space for higher quality resolutions. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
You need 4K video and your social posts need to not look like grease is smeared on the lens when you post on social media...your viewers can tell the difference.

Getting a specific look in your videos takes more than copying camera settings.

Copying someone else's camera settings from YouTube is why your videos still look weird...

- Do you have a window in your space?
- What kind of microphone are you using?
- Where is the microphone going to be placed when you're recording?
- What kind of lights are you using?
- Are they properly diffused?
- Did you set the white balance for that space?

I wish it was as simple as a copy and paste formula but video simply doesn't work like that.
