The Ladue and Frontenac Police Departments are each investigating after two separate beehives were set on fire in just the past two months.
The most recent incident occurred Sept. 11 around 5 a.m. at the Carmelite Monastery off Clayton Road. Doorbell video from across the street shows an explosion in the distance and smoke billowing from the beehive.
The Ladue Fire Department responded and put the fire out before it could spread, but the hive was destroyed. It appeared the alleged suspect doused the hive with a fire accelerant—possibly gasoline—before setting it ablaze.
Neighbor Amanda Holman was stunned to find out what happened.
“It was somewhat of an explosion,” Holman explained. “Somebody definitely didn’t want these bees here anymore.”
She lives close to the monastery and knows the beekeeper, and she says he is devastated by what happened. The beekeeper, who spoke to FOX 2 but did not want to be identified, had an agreement with the monastery that he could use the space. He underscored how unnecessary setting the hive on fire was and emphasized how critical bees are to our ecosystem.
Other neighbors also don’t understand why someone would do this, according to Holman.
“They’re honeybees! They’re critical to our existence. It’s a shame. But I hope whoever did this either learns their lesson or gets caught,” she said.

A man villainized for shooting an escaped chimp on his property in 2001 is called a “hero” by some today.
He’s also responsible for the start of our coverage on a chimpanzee compound, which led to the national docuseries, “Chimp Crazy.” He did not make the cut in that program, despite his extraordinary story.
We first brought reports about the Festus chimpanzee compound and Tonia Haddix in 2020—because a man named Jason Coats tipped us to a chimpanzee escape.
He was convicted as a felon in 2001 for shooting an escaped chimp that ran onto his property when he was 17. It was an incident we interviewed him about in 2009 when Coats described the escaped chimp as “rocking the car back and forth, windmilling on the windows.”
He credits his dog Lucky with saving his life and the lives of his friends with him at the time. He said his dog distracted the chimp named Suzy, until he says the chimp threw his dog like a rag doll. Coats then shot the chimp.
“It was to the point where I couldn’t really even go to Walmart without getting cussed at. I couldn’t go out in public. They contacted my teachers at school,” he said.
He said the chimp’s owner, Connie Casey, took out a newspaper ad, “Make sure Suzy’s killer is punished!” along with a sign in her yard with Coats’ address.

Two of the region’s largest police departments have cut ties with St. Louis businessman Andy Frisella after he made disparaging remarks about female police officers during an expletive-laden rant on his podcast.
The statements were made on the September 12 episode of Frisella’s podcast, “Real AF,” while he and on-air cohort Davione Johnson were discussing the fallout from a traffic stop involving football player Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins.
Frisella, creator of the 75 Hard fitness challenge and co-founder of Supplement Superstore and 1st Phorm, told Johnson that a lot of officers have a power trip and then he singled out women.
“…There’s a lot of police officers—to be completely honest, especially women police officers—who f—— try to emasculate men. They try to make men feel like they’re being dominated or they’re being, you know, that they have power over them. And, bro, the quickest way to escalate a situation is to do that to a grown man, you know?” Frisella said.

Police are investigating after a string of robberies and violent attacks overnight in the Dutchtown neighborhood in St. Louis.
All three crimes were robberies and assaults that happened within about a mile of each other early Wednesday in the Dutchtown neighborhood of south St. Louis City. Fortunately, none of the victims were seriously hurt. Police are still trying to determine whether two of the crimes were connected to each other.
The first attack happened around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday morning at Osage and South Compton near Marquette Park. Police say a 49-year-old woman told police that she was robbed at gunpoint by five men. The men allegedly took money out of the woman’s purse, then ran away.
Police say just a little more than a half hour later, at 12:50 a.m., a 44-year-old man was robbed of his cellphone and wallet at gunpoint on Chippewa, close to Nebraska. Police say the man was hit in the head by a flashlight, but declined medical attention at the scene. A 30-year-old man who was also with the man during the robbery didn’t suffer from any injuries.
