Trad music friends and record lovers, here is another "record of the week" (seems what these posts are becoming) from my collection: -- a very nice 1960 7" 45rpm vinyl EP (4 songs) from the legendary Irish sean nos singer Joe Heaney. This is a lovely gem from the short-lived London label Collector Records (late '50s-early '60s.) Heaney is in top form here - energetic, humorous, with impeccable phrasing yet open and spontaneous. Masterful music on an historic little record. A real treat.

A fun arrival in the mail yesterday, ordered a while back: an original 1968 release vinyl of The Johnstons' first LP. This was (and still is) a true landmark in the Irish folk revival of the '60s, featuring of course Adrienne & Luci Johnston, along with very young versions of Paul Brady and the late Mick Moloney! The vinyl is in excellent condition, the music absolutely remarkable, and I feel quite fortunate to add it to the collection. You'll be hearing tracks on The Gold Ring radio show soon.

Very sad news just coming out that the great Mick Moloney has passed away at the age of 77. For over 50 years Mick has been an important voice in Irish traditional music, not only as a fine singer and instrumentalist, but also as scholar, producer, teacher, researcher, historian. His contributions to encouraging upcoming musicians and singers, to researching teaching and preserving the history of this music, are impossible to quantify. One of the true greats, gone from us, but leaving behind a rich legacy of music and influence and scholarship. Rest easy, Mick -- and thank you.

A really nice addition to the collection arrived today. The renowned uilleann piper Patsy Touhey released only three commercial 78rpm sides during his career, all three recorded in 1919, and released respectively in 1919, 1920, and this one in 1924, a year after his death. I have had the first two in my small collection for a while, but this third one is apparently a bit more rare, and after a long search I found it only recently. This is a nice copy, and sounds wonderful on my Great-grandfather Cosby's 1916 Victrola! And you'll be hearing it soon on "The Gold Ring!"
