Dear Friends of SMP,
Earlier this week, the title track from the album "In the Autumn Years" was released worldwide.
The genre of the album, "In the Autumn Years," is jazz-pop with classical-music influences:
jazz - the playing is spontaneous and improvised
pop - the melodies are like so many that earned millions
classical - at times, the solo-piano music suggests the writing
of Beethoven, Chopin, and others.
The song "In the Autumn Years" was in the file of Nat King Cole to be recorded, but he passed on before it happened. 70 years later, we finally have this beautiful instrumental rendering of the melody from the song "In the Autumn Years."
It begins with some impressionism and then presents the first chorus of the song, rubato. There's a small, in-tempo interlude that enables the in-tempo second chorus, which is lightly swung. The ending is big, with hints of Liszt and Roger Williams!
In his review of the album "In the Autumn Years" (also published earlier this week), a well-known jazz journalist, C. Michael Bailey, related that within the album, one could hear,
"a touch of Art Tatum playing Fats Waller,"
and that the,
"piano method recalls Thelonious Monk performing solo with
implied stride elements in nearly every performance."
If all of this appeals to you, then you should love listening to the title track from "In the Autumn Years."
