Pulled over to explore a creek along Suiattle River Road. I believe this is Tenas Creek which begins as outflow from Boulder Lake. This little pocket of forest was delightful to explore with camera and senses. Lush green fauna and late afternoon sunlight.

Driving eastbound on SR 20 behind the pilot truck around 7pm today, and then returning westbound around 7:40pm. Seems firefighters were just coming off the fire lines.

Evening Twilight along the Snohomish River: Captured just after sunset on Thursday evening, this peaceful scene showcases the calm waters and vibrant hues of the evening sky. The gentle breeze and distant sounds of nature, including waterfowl, a cow, and a nearby miniature donkey, create a serene atmosphere. In the final shot, the donkey's bray comes through most clearly, startling in its suddenness.

Timelapse featuring today’s noon hour sky above Bailey Farm in Snohomish, Washington. No audio. I’d set-out to see if winds were bringing wildfire smoke our way, but only saw what appeared to be clouds. The clouds in the distance (west) appeared as if stretched and pulled apart by winds at that altitude. What was clear was how dry the area remains. Pretty much a constant breeze and occasional gusts, too. Temperature was 71 degrees during this moment. Conditions in the region remain a high concern due to potential for wildfires.

Initially wondered if we’d see this morning’s sunrise through the clouds. The temperature was a refreshing 55-degrees when I arrived at Glacier Peak High School for this vantage point overlooking the Snohomish Valley. Finally, the sun emerged; first appearing as a glint so small it could not be seen on a wide shot during my livestream. And then, for several minutes, there it was in its entirety. Wildfire smoke intensified the hues of orange. The forecast calls for a high of 70 today, a welcome break from more than 2 weeks of temps above 80. Happy Monday.

Here’s a slow left-to-right pan revealing the Northern Lights over Skagit Bay. So, it begins looking west towards the setting moon and then reveals the Northern Lights to the north and northeast. Location is the English Boom Preserve on the north end of Camano Island (more info on this location in prior post). Video shot with iPhone.

What a night! The Northern Lights didn’t disappoint and it’s been wonderful to see how much joy people have had experiencing them. My two youngest sons and I spent most of this adventure at the English Boom Nature Preserve on the north end of Camano Island. I’ve been going to this patch of ground/water since the ‘80s (when my parents bought a home on Utsalady Rd). For years it nearly felt like a secret location, but that sure has changed. NEVER have I seen so many people and cars as I saw last night. The parking continued from the beach up the hillside road that winds down the bluff. A local businesss person kindly offered his parking space near the small airport above the bluff and my sons and I walked down the road to the beach from that parking spot.
Additionally, the tide was high. And that meant limited real estate. You don’t want to venture east along this beach at high tide because of the many narrow channels that surround you and overflow at high tide, meaning all escape routes can be suddenly cut off resulting in a dangerous predicament (one my oldest son and I nearly experienced in 2005).
Almost all of last night’s photos (exceptions are photos of the parking area as we approached the beach and a photo of me taken by another son) were taken with an iPhone. A few others were taken with a Canon 7D. In both cases, I used a tripod (I brought two tripods for this purpose). Long exposures from 3 to 30 seconds helped catch the colorful drama unfolding in the sky.
We arrived at the beach parking area at 9:01 p.m. (time first photo was taken). The final photo taken at Camano Island was 12:07 a.m.)
By 10:48 p.m., the main event arrived! Sudden bursts of color and light exploding in the sky immediately triggered rushes of adrenaline and excitement up and down the beach in the form of repeated choruses of “Oooohs!”and “Aahhhs!”
After midnight, I decided it would be best to get my boys home for bed. I recalled full nights by myself with a camera along this shore in years long before my two youngest sons were born.
As we walked up the road, I was rather stunned to see so many people still arriving at this location. Cars and trucks moving (actually mostly waiting to move) in both directions struggled to travel the road. This is a rather narrow, simple road lined with forest at this point; a simple road not made for such an onslaught. My sons and I—-along with other pedestrians—-literally squeezed between vehicles that were going nowhere. We were careful not to touch them with our tripods and camera bags.
On the way home, we stopped along Springhetti Road in Snohomish. The Northern Lights were very much still churchning and filling large areas of the sky. The Snohomish photos are included at the end of this series. They were shot between 1:42 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. today.
The forecast for tonight and tomorrow remains very promising for viewing the Northern Lights. Here’s a bit of info that may be helpful in the event it plays-out similarly, again.
Last night, I first noticed the faint activity appear to the northeast and a bit less intensely to the north. What surprised me was that once things moved into full-gear, the best action was mainly overhead, and even a tad SOUTH of us. Don’t ignore the northeast though. A lot of green filled that sky, at times.
So, be sure to look north and northeast, but don’t forget to look up. 🙂
If you are venturing out, stay safe and have fun. I even got some decent photos of my boys with the Northern Light behind them. Talk about preserving special memories!
