Shop Talk is back!

I spent the first two months of the year refining, improving, and streamline my casting setup for larger scale production. It is working like a dream!

I’m exploring CSD 2078 from thermoset solutions as a replacement for Alumilite urethane resin. It has a decent cost increase, but has many favorable properties that I have mentioned and plan to explore in teatinf and posts. One importantt claim that seems to be true is vetter color separation at lower temperatures. This allows for impressive, consistent, striking results without the rush and worry of bubbles with the shorter open time of alumilite clear slow. Layman terms.. I have 5-10 minutes to pour a mix instead of 1-2 risking ruining blanks. See the picture below for a comparison of clear slow (left) and thermoset (right). Note the clarity of the black, white, and gray on the right vs the muddy blending on the left. The mix is called “Bad Hair Day.” 😊💚

I plan to continue on with Thermoset CSD 2078 for the foreseeable future. It may require a blank price increase down the road, but I want everyone to enjoy it at the same pricing for now.

$10 Short 6” x 3/4”
$15 Bespoke 8 1/4” x 3/4”
$22 Long 11 7/8” x 3/4
$40 Double Bottle Stopper 6” x 1 1/2”

“Turning to turning” 😂🤷🏼‍♂️🙇

Production times have been too slow fore my liking. This is a combination of several factors: focus on casting (previously discussed), overhauling my finishing process, and limited time.

I want to significantly improve the consistency and efficiency of my external AND internal polishing! I have had to sortbd more than 15 hours on a single pen to get it looking the way you all deserve from me and that isnt sustainable. I have consulted a number of makers i trust on the matter, weighed options, and elected to lean into a robust process heavily involving buffing wheels. I will share the results as I work through it in coming weeks, but i have been hard at work sorting products and compounds, while procuring the items needed for this overhaul all month. My hope is that i can bring pens to life on a more consistent andd oredictable schedule for public drops and reopen my saturated commission slots slowly.

Keep your eyes peeled for a run of straight dip nib holders I will be making as test items. Some have intended homes and some will be dropped publically. Stay tuned! 🤘🏻

Lastly, we come to my limited time. I hate to make excuses and truly haven’t needed to do so. All of you, my friends, family, and customers, have been beyond understanding as I turn your requested items. Speed and quality improve over time during an artisan’s journey. Clearly you know which of the two I am willing to compromise on (not QUALITY). I have to remind myself of two factors: I have only been on this journey for two years and my life outside of pens is packed.

I haves been blessed with a beautiful wife of 11 years ( Zogg), three spectacular children (Mara 4, Graham 2, and Rowan 2), and a successfull career as a Nurse Anesthesiologist full time in Sioux Falls. Time is short and my family deserves my continues efforts to honor, appreciate, and support them all. This is especially true for my wife Katy, who provides me what opportunity I have to make beautiful items. I could not do any of this without her. Thank you, truly 💚

I have one more BIG surprise on the turning front: I was able to acquire a stunningly well-preserved Southbend 9a metal lathe through a series of fortunate and unlikely events! Thank you to all that made that possible and Tim Cullen fore the find online and questions I keep asking 🙏🏻😊

This will be an opportunity to grow my abilities and improve the quailty I bring back to you all in the future. Its purchase would not have been possible without the support you have all given my casting and turning adventure. I wont let us down 💚💚

That’s all for now. Thank you all!

💚💚Practice Gratitude and Choose Joy💚💚
