Today the Silsbee Bee celebrated their 105th year of circulation today. The Bee has been a huge source of information and entertainment for many generations. I was pleased to meet all of the current staff and newest owner.

I am excited for the future of this historic paper and am pleased to work with this group of fine people in my research for both this page and Listen Closely Podcast.

“Japan Surrenders”

V-J Day, or Victory over Japan Day, marks the end of World War II, one of the deadliest and most destructive wars in history. President Harry S. Truman announced on Aug. 14, 1945 that Japan, finally recognizing that victory was impossible, had surrendered unconditionally to the Allied Forces. American citizens erupted in celebration. On September 2nd, the Japanese Government would officially sign the surrender documents ending World War II.

Retired General weighs in on a very controversial topic of the time.

As we know, the African American people were freed from slavery in 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation(though it still took time to enact fully) but at the time of this publication they were still very much NOT equal in the eyes of the government nor the mass majority of Americans. It would take almost 50 years for desegregation to begin.

It’s always fun to look back on old articles, but the holidays are the best! It gives us a glance of what has changed and what has stayed the same.

Here are a few clippings I found within the same paper that gives a good example of this. Notice the ads are more geared towards wartime and NOT Valentine’s Day.

“The Tylenol Murders and Aftermath”

The Tylenol murders were a series of poisoning deaths resulting from drug tampering in the Chicago metropolitan area in late September and early October of 1982. The victims consumed Johnson & Johnson’s Tylenol-branded acetaminophen capsules which had been laced with potassium cyanide.

Seven people died in the original poisonings, and there were several more deaths in subsequent copycat crimes involving other over-the-counter capsule medications.

Because of the original 1982 poisoning incident, the pharmaceutical, food, and consumer product industries developed tamper-resistant packagings, such as seals and improved quality control methods.

“All Hope…Abandoned”

Recently I watched a historical program about the 1912 WhiteStar Oceanliner, S.S. Titanic. Through the years, we have been fascinated with the tale and mystery surrounding what happened that fateful night. It has been in media via a 1997 Hollywood box office hit to the very recent Titan sub disaster “tour”.

I decided to look and see what local papers had to say on the topic. This is only a handful I found, most stemming from Houston and Galveston (both with active ports themselves).

For paper publication dates, see each photo for information.

Enjoyed listening to Historian and Author W. T. Block’s son as he recounted his many hours of bringing us the works of his father! So thankful for him preserving history for us all to enjoy.

Also in attendance was RediscoveringSETX, another wonderful source of local history and events around our area.

I for one have always been fascinated in headstones and learning the history behind the names. While many don’t get news article recognition, we should always be respectful to those who came before us.

“Dog and Pony Show”

A “dog and pony show” was originally used to refer to smaller traveling circuses that toured through small towns and rural areas. The name derives from the common use of performing dogs and ponies as the main attractions of the events instead of larger, more exotic animals and human performers.

The most famous troupe under this term was "Prof. Gentry's Famous Dog & Pony Show", which began when teenager Henry Gentry and his brothers started touring around the 1880s originally under the “Gentry’s Equine and Canine Paradox”. By the early 1900s, their troupe was the greatest travelling show in the country, even rivaling the famous Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. Unfortunately after several changes in ownership, the Gentry Circus went bankrupt and disbanded in 1929 and Henry Gentry died in 1940.
