Public lands are public year round. I urge you to get out and explore outside of just duck season.

I think you’ll be shocked at what you find.

Thanks for the adventure yesterday .

Tools of the Trade.

I’ve identified a couple shortcomings of the Bergara factory chassis when shooting PRS events. #1) it needs more weight up front to better balance the rifle. #2) I need a bag stop of some sort to stop from pushing the magazine into the bag when shooting off a barricade, causing misfeeds.

I ordered an Area419 arca rail with built in bag stop to help address both of these issues. My plan is to rig up some sort of weight on the front of the rail to help balance the rifle better as well. Two birds with one stone, so to speak.

One downside (not really) is that I can’t use this bipod anymore since I’m giving up the sling studs to mount the arca rail. To be honest, I hated this bipod anyway so it’s an excuse to upgrade 😉

WANTED. REWARD: Workable mallards in the woods.

Well, second split is about to come to a close. Morale seems low across the board. What are your predictions for the final stretch? Will Arkansas get enough water and birds to turn things around before time runs out?

Tools of the trade.

People scoff at bird-less days, but today was one of the first times in awhile where I’ve been able to walk around during a hunt and let the creative side of my mind “wander” without the fear of being the reason birds flare.

The first image is the one I’m most happy with, after having found the best light & composition. The second image is what I would’ve gotten had I not left my tree.

Gotta find a way to stay creative 🤙🏻

Mid-Morning Audible.

Couple test images with my new Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II lens. Purposely shot these with a harsh backlight and the lens handled it phenomenally.

Worth every stinkin’ penny!

Controversy time: What’s your preferred method of hanging ducks from a strap and why?

IMO, it’s easier to hang by the head, but feet-up looks better for pics.

What drives you?

When I first shifted my instagram to be a photography page, I would post 100% of my final edited images.

Now, they get exported and saved to my iPhone where they sit, mostly never to be seen by more than a handful of people.

What changed? Well, I used to be, and truthfully still kind of am, a sucker for likes… But, that’s not how IG works anymore. It seems the more followers I have, the less people actually see my photo posts.

Since the “like” pandemic has been all but castrated, I routinely find myself getting that same level of dopamine “hit” from the personal reactions of those that I do share my final images with.

Early in the social media days, I think a lot of us associated likes with appreciation of our work. That’s just not a true indicator now, nor do I think that it probably ever was.

At the end of the day, I don’t really think it matters whether you shoot to post bangers on social for likes, or to give your buddy a lasting memory of the best damn hunting dog they’ll likely have in their life… you have to find what drives YOU.

Like Mother, Like Son.

It’s always special when you’re able to get multiple generations of family in the woods together at the same time.

Perhaps more special, is multiple generations of dogs.

This was the first time I’d ever seen a mother-son team hunt together simultaneously. Watching both dogs be handled by the same handler only elevated the experience further.

I love duck hunting.

Tried something new on this last trip. Stuck my 50mm f/1.4 on my photo body and didn’t change it for the entire trip.

My comfort crutch for years has been the 70-200mm focal range. Trying to force myself out of those creative ruts we all get stuck in from time to time.

50mm definitely has a different look. I found myself really wishing I could compress the image more at times. All-said-and-done, though… I’m pretty happy with the stills.

Frankly, I’m debating shooting any personal work for the entire duck season with that 50mm lens…

Thoughts?

Springtime in the delta.

Gone are the droves of boats packed with decoys. Spring, typically a prime stage for the showcase of farm implements.

Yet, we were there.

Something neat happened this weekend.

The first of its kind, an event focused on bringing individuals from the outdoor photography space together to share an experience. We were challenged to break from our traditional styles and safety nets. Challenged, to see the world in a different light.

I was apprehensive, I will be honest. I did not know the overwhelming majority of attendees and guests. Though, that proved to be part of the reason it was so successful.

What exactly did the weekend hold? Well, I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

I will say, if you get the opportunity to go to the next one, I would not miss it.

I know I won’t.

Thanks again for the hospitality and . The event was a hit. I’m excited to see what the future holds.

It’s hard to describe the bond between a handler and their dog. It’s one thing to see them work while training. It’s another, to watch the real thing come together.

I’ve been blessed to watch both.

Rowdy.

Yea, we’re gonna need to circle back on this one. It ain’t over yet.

There’s something special about watching a young pup figure it out.

I’ve been blessed to hunt with friends that handle some stellar retrievers. The ease that comes with hunting alongside such partners can quickly cause one to almost forget not all retrievers are such.

Occasionally, I find myself in a blind with a less experienced pup. This day was such a day.

Denali, a started dog. She knew what she had to do, though this world was very different from which she was familiar. The jump from training grounds to a full blown hunt scenario. Almost akin to a teenager making the jump to high school.

Anxious. Confused.

I was rooting for her, though. Every step. Every correction. Every retrieve. Slowly, yet surely, she starting putting things together.

Now, I’m no trainer. Hell, the only thing my dogs retrieve are acorns from the backyard, and the occasional rabbit that wasn’t quick enough to get under the fence.

A word of advice, though, to any new handler. Slow it down. Keep it fun. I saw the fire in this pup getting to do what she loves. Don’t be the bucket of water that puts it out.

Enjoy the break. Check you equipment. Round two will be here before you know it.

Black dogs and gray ducks.

That ol’ red dirt proved fruitful for us this past weekend.

I can’t lie though, I’m excited to see some mallards bust through treetops on the home turf this weekend. Got that special kind of green on my mind 🦆

Good luck to everyone this weekend. Remember… Wear your life jackets & kill cords. Watch your muzzles and shooting lanes. Everyone wants to go home at the end of the day 🤙🏻

Gear arguments this year are going to revolve more around Adidas vs Nike instead of Sitka vs Chene.

Don’t know how much boating we’ll be doing when the first split opens.

Adidas is the correct answer, by the way.
