“Children’s Blizzard” of 1888 - Cold weather a reminder of historic blizzard

Nebraskans are accustomed to cold temperatures and adverse weather during the winter months, but those cold temperatures are also reminders of the hardships suffered by Nebraska settlers in Clipper Country who dealt with sub-zero temperatures, strong winds and large amounts of snow such as during the so called “Children’s Blizzard,” the Blizzard of 1888, even though there has not been much snow of any consequence early this winter season and the blizzard’s 137th anniversary passed by last month.
Wood River area historian Verle Dority penned two pieces in the pages of the Wood River Sunbeam on January 16, 1964, and June 8, 1978, on the Janu- ary 12, 1888, blizzard and how it affected some of the people in the Wood River area. Following are selected parts from Mr. Dority’s stories.

The 67th Nebraska Agri-Business Exposition was held January 28-29, in Kearney, at the Younes Conference Center North. This day and a half event consisted of educational training in conjunction with the Nebraska Extension’s Crop Production Clinics and a show of vendor exhibits.

Casual Closet by Dynamic T’s, located at 817 Front Street in Gibbon, offers women’s, men’s, infant and children’s clothing; toys; jewelry; books; candles; and gift items. “We also just received a stock of prom dresses,” reported Casual Closet owner, life-long Gibbon resident Jennifer Samuelson. She and husband, Brad, are owners of Dynamic T’s at 819 Front Street, a staple in the Gibbon business district for many years.
