SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE 7-DAY FORECAST
A big warm-up is on the way as we head into the upcoming work week. High temperatures will climb into the upper 60s and low 70s by Wednesday and Thursday.

We do have a few chances for rain this week. A weak disturbance will move through the region Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for light rain showers, especially along and east of I-65.
Another small rain chance arrives Thursday as a warm front lifts north through the area.

Our best chance for rain comes on Friday ahead of a cold front. At this point, this looks mainly like a rain event, but I’m not quite ready to rule out a few thunderstorms just yet. As we get closer, confidence will improve and I’ll have more details. This is the event I've been alluding to over the past week in our snapshot videos. Rain totals need to be defined a bit more, but this event does look widespread enough to drop up to an inch of rainfall.

Behind Friday’s cold front, temperatures will cool back down heading into next weekend.

As always, I’ll have updates all week with our Heritage South Community Credit Union Weather Blogs and Kirby’s Weather Snapshot videos. You can also check the forecast anytime on stnweather.com, on our smartphone apps, and on our 24/7 Weather Channel.

PATCHY DENSE FOG is being seen this morning, especially across our southern and eastern communitues.

Take it slow if you're out driving in the fog! In areas where fog is not present, the sun is already starting to come out from behind the clouds. Have a GREAT Saturday!

ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY…
The January 2nd, 2022 “surprise snowstorm.”

One day after severe weather moved through Middle Tennessee, we were gearing up for a very light snowfall event.
The morning of January 2nd, a Winter Weather Advisory was issued for a half inch to two inches of snowfall, so not very much was expected.
As we got deeper into the day, model data became more consistent that this could be a bigger snow than we were expecting. The ground was still pretty warm, and it was hard to believe accumulating snowfall was coming.

By 7:00 PM, light rain began to transition to snow. The snow quickly became heavy and coated everything in sight. A low pressure then formed to our southeast and the heavy, wet snow continued through midnight before slowly tapering off.

Overall, snowfall totals were anywhere between 6 and 9 inches, with a few reports of 10+ inches around Bell Buckle and Fosterville. Widespread power outages were also an issue due to how wet the snow was. This was the biggest snowstorm in over a decade to hit Southern Middle Tennessee.

Half an inch to 2 inches of snow, turned into 6 to 10 inches. Mother Nature will always humble you!
