The new Episode of NEPA Story is here! Don't miss out!

On this episode of NEPA Story, Kylie Montigney interviewed Heather Northrop! Heather Northrop owns Behold A New Thing Plymouth in Plymouth, PA. Having moved to Plymouth from FL in late 2021, Heather and her husband took time to get to know their new community and ask everyone “What does Plymouth need?” In their questioning, they repeatedly heard, “We need something to do!” Heather also noticed the vast array of cultures and backgrounds currently living in Plymouth and learned that it has historically been an ethnically diverse community. Behold A New Thing was born in August 2022 to embrace the abundance of talent and culture in the area and provide local communities with new and exciting activities to participate in. The shop is a collective of handcrafted items by Pennsylvania artists, and the artists teach art classes as well. Many classes and projects involve bringing the community together with a common goal. Behold A New Thing is currently home to over 25 different artists from throughout Pennsylvania, and showcases their works of stained and fused glass, epoxy, collage, watercolor and acrylic paint, paper crafts, jewelry, spray paint art, coffee and tea production, photography, resin work, fiber arts, candle and soap making, wire art and woodcraft. The shop is located at 25 E. Main St in Plymouth in a former bank building that has graced Main Street since the early 19th century. In addition to the shop and classroom areas, Behold A New Thing has an area with tables and comfy chairs where people are welcome to sit, read, draw, or just relax. Games and puzzles are also available for free use.

New Episode of NEPA Story is out!

On this episode of NEPA Story, Kylie Montigney interviewed Brendan Brisk of Brendan Brisk Band! Signers of Astrology Days Records, the Wilkes-Barre based Brendan Brisk Band is riding a wave of momentum that is only beginning to crest. Best known for his kinetic guitar leads, Brendan is a fervent home studio engineer and self-taught multi-instrumentalist whose talent for composing and arranging music shines through on record. 2016 debut Astral Counterfeit was entirely self-produced and performed. The requirements of translating his music to a live setting led him to form Brendan Brisk Band, coalescing around drummer Justin Malinowski, and trumpeter Miles Orfanella. This lineup, aided by a handful of guest contributors, features on 2020’s full-length Relaxylvania, which offers a panorama of styles and textures, moving effortlessly from the laid-back and atmospheric to frenzied extroversion; from the earthly and personal to the spectral and ethereal. Latest EP Never Everywhere, mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Phil Joly, brings a new level of sophistication to this approach, overdubbing keys, winds, and synthesizers to convey its creators’ ideas. Brisk’s music is rooted in blues and folk traditions while incorporating soul, fiery avant-garde jazz, and modern jam signifiers. Equally inspired by the surroundings of their native Northeastern Pennsylvania and the mysteries of consciousness and the cosmos, the group aims to bring its audience to a place of inspiration and creativity, abstracted from the daily grind of obligation and ambition. Lush and layered studio productions translate to the stage with a stripped-down palette characterized by a sometimes mellow, sometimes driving, and always danceable rhythm and sharp improvisation from the ensemble with Brisk and Orfanella trading solos.

07/29/2024

A community is defined by the collective actions of its members, and it is the compassionate actions of these individuals that truly reflect the greatness of a community. Compassion is the ability to understand and empathize with the struggles of others, and to take positive steps to alleviate their suffering. When members of a community come together to offer support, assistance, and comfort to those in need, they create a network of care and kindness that strengthens the bonds between them.

One of the most important aspects of compassionate actions is their ability to foster a sense of unity and belonging within a community. When individuals come together to support one another, they build trust and camaraderie that transcends differences in background, beliefs, or opinions. This sense of unity creates a strong foundation for a community to tackle challenges and celebrate successes together.

In conclusion, the greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members. When individuals come together to support and care for one another, they create a community that is resilient, inclusive, and united. By embracing compassion as a core value, communities can build a better future for all, and create a world where kindness and empathy are the driving forces behind positive change.
