Tourism as Change Agent:

" Touristic travel exists for the sake of change. But what, exactly, gets changed?

Tourists are less likely to borrow from their hosts than their hosts are from them, thus precipitating a chain of change in the host community.

We go to experience a change, but end up inflicting change on others."

Most community nonprofits certainly do good work and play a valuable local role.

But then there are those members of the so-called NONPROFITS INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. Locally, they operate as an incestuous, insular bunch, in a classic cartel sense..

We all know who they are in the City of Saratoga Springs.

In "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," Robert M. Pirsig explores the relationship between quality, philosophy, and the human experience through the lens of a motorcycle journey across the United States. Blending narratives of a father-son road trip with philosophical reflections, the book delves into the nature of quality and how it influences our lives. Here are ten key lessons and insights from the book:

1. The Journey vs. the Destination: Pirsig emphasizes the importance of valuing the journey itself rather than merely focusing on the destination. This idea encourages readers to appreciate the experiences and lessons learned along the way, fostering a deeper connection to life.

2. Quality as a Central Concept: The author introduces the concept of "Quality" as an essential element of life and existence. Pirsig argues that understanding and appreciating quality can lead to a more meaningful and fulfilling life, transcending the dichotomy of classical and romantic viewpoints.

3. The Interconnection of Technology and Philosophy: Pirsig explores the relationship between technology and human experience, suggesting that they are not separate entities. Instead, he advocates for a harmonious relationship where technology is approached with mindfulness and care, enhancing our understanding of quality.

4. The Value of Maintenance: Through the metaphor of motorcycle maintenance, Pirsig highlights the importance of taking care of both machines and the self. Regular maintenance, whether on a motorcycle or in life, symbolizes the need for attention, care, and a commitment to quality.

5. Eastern Philosophy and Western Rationality: The book contrasts Eastern philosophical concepts, particularly Zen Buddhism, with Western rationality. Pirsig suggests that integrating these perspectives can lead to a more balanced approach to understanding life and quality.

6. Understanding the Self: Pirsig reflects on the nature of the self and identity. He proposes that self-understanding and introspection are crucial for personal growth, and that quality in life arises from a deep connection with oneself.

7. The Role of Rationality in Human Experience: While Pirsig explores the limits of rationality, he also acknowledges its importance. He argues that rational thought should be combined with emotional and intuitive understanding to achieve a holistic perspective on life.

8. The Importance of Mindfulness: The author emphasizes the value of mindfulness in everyday activities, particularly in technical tasks like motorcycle maintenance. Approaching tasks with awareness and presence can lead to a deeper appreciation of the process and its intrinsic quality.

9. The Societal Disconnect from Quality: Pirsig critiques modern society's tendency to prioritize efficiency and productivity over quality. He suggests that this disconnect can lead to dissatisfaction and a lack of fulfillment, advocating for a return to valuing quality in all aspects of life.

10. The Search for Meaning: Ultimately, Pirsig's journey reflects a quest for meaning and understanding. He encourages readers to engage in their own philosophical inquiries and to seek a personal definition of quality that resonates with their experiences and values.

In "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," Robert M. Pirsig provides a thought-provoking exploration of philosophy, quality, and the human experience. By engaging with these ten key lessons and insights, readers are invited to reflect on their own lives, fostering a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationship with the world around them. The book serves as a philosophical guide, encouraging mindfulness, self-awareness, and a commitment to quality in both thought and action.

Wassup, Gazette?

For half a century, the The Daily Gazette of Schenectady has bragged of being a non-chain publication in a "last of the indies" spirit.

Now the new publisher is bragging of his buying up other papers within an ever widening radius.

The non-chain is now on a mission to be a chain.

Now that we are in the season of "gift giving", ponder the idea of a gift economy, wherein we share our gifts of abundance with each other, "paying it forward" without expectation of compensation or payment. Scarcity that is induced by the fake fiat debt-based monetary system can be replaced by an economy based on kindness and caring for our fellow man. Read this outstanding substack article by Gavin Mounsey for more inspiration on this topic:

Excerpts from Recipes For Reciprocity and my thoughts on divesting from the scarcity based economy to invest in Gift Economics to recognize and potentiate natural abundance

"So where did you guys meet?"

The answer of "in a bar" had decreased -66% from its late 70's/early 80's peak.

That says quite a bit about the harsh reality of our communities in the modern day --- and is another indictment of our Loneliness Epidemic.

Public spaces and meeting grounds are important. We are poorer without them.

Black Friday?

Let's stop using polite terms such as "national brands" and "popular chains" for these mega corporate monsters sucking the soul and money out of our local communities. Here are some suggestions for better labels:

Downtown Killers
Anti-Community Activists
Corporate Invaders
Robber Chains

Because when a national retailer or restaurant opens a new location, one or more local business owners are being told:

"You're excused. You can go home now."
