Director Paul Freedman spent four years shooting in Skid Row - a fifty square-block area of downtown Los Angeles that has been home to unhoused residents for over five decades. As developers salivate over the value of real estate and City Hall does their bidding, brutal police policies terrorize Skid Row’s population, leaving the defenseless, unhoused residents to care for themselves - and each other.

“I had no idea what I was getting into when I started four years ago,” says Freedman. “All I knew was that I couldn’t keep pretending homelessness wasn’t there. I had to find a different response. I decided to make a film because that’s what I know how to do. At the beginning, though...I was totally lost. Thank God I met Pete!”

Freedman is referring to Skid Row organizer Pete White who acts as The Dirty Divide’s unofficial host. As Executive Director for the Los Angeles Community Action Network (LACAN), White has seen a lot of filmmakers come and go over the years. “Most of them end up walking away from the challenge because the issues are too huge,” White remarks. "Skid Row is home and a community that bears its truths and scars openly--no pretense. But in order to tell the authentic story of how and why people are here you must earn trust on these streets. I told Paul that on day
one.”

Heeding White’s counsel, Freedman spent months volunteering in Skid Row before ever turning on his camera.

“Pete’s was the first and best piece of advice I got while making the film,” Freedman admits. “It allowed me to get to know the people here as human beings first, not as film subjects. And that became the entire basis for the film I ultimately made.”

One of the most powerful elements of the film is Freedman’s emphasis on the lived experience of individuals living in Skid Row. It’s not that Freedman shies away from shady politics, wasted money, lies, and unkept promises, but what he really wants audiences to focus on are the people.

This is where the film excels, and its intimate study of the human beings in Skid Row reveals something incredible but easy to miss - a creative culture brimming with musicians, painters, poets, activists, and chefs. Audiences meet Darrell, a guitarist who plays so much like Jimi Hendrix it’s nearly impossible to tell them apart. They also meet Janice who walked into LACAN one day and started improvising songs like Nina Simone. There is Charlene, cooking up her “sizzle, sizzle, fry, fry” with so much love and pathos you can smell the carnitas as their steam rises into the Los Angeles night.

“I didn’t want the film to be about ‘the problem’ of houselessness,” Freedman declares. “Unhoused people aren’t a
‘problem,’ they’re human beings. If there is a problem, its mine – and it happens every time I look away.”

It’s been a long haul for Freedman, White, and fellow producer, Adam Klugman, to make the film. In the end, there aren’t any easy answers. But after four years of filming inside the largest houseless community in the country, Freedman stands by what he has discovered.

“I truly believe,” Freedman says hopefully, “if we want to get serious about solutions, it starts by recognizing that the
dirty divide is in our heads. Because when we really look on the other side of it, all we see are people. Beautiful, tender people with complex lives that matter as much as anyone’s.”

“This film is coming at an important time,” Pete White warns. “Rents have never been more expensive in this country.
Gentrification is at an all-time high in most major cities. And we’re hurtling toward a COVID-related, unpaid-rent cliff
that is going to send a lot of honest, hardworking people onto the street. If we want to help them, first we must be able to see them for who and what they actually are – real people, with important lives, who need our love.”
