Eastern New Mexico University Announces Arts Festival Headlined by Alumni

Eastern New Mexico University and the ENMU Foundation will host an inaugural music, arts, film, and masterclass festival on the Portales, New Mexico campus September 10-12. Billed as the “Return of the Hounds: Alumni Masterclass+ Festival.” the event will bring back some of the university’s most notable alumni
for a 3-day event aimed at inspiring a new generation of artists, musicians, and journalists.

As the festival finale, a free community concert on September 12 will feature 2-time Grammy-winning artist Robert Mirabal of Taos Pueblo.

“This is absolutely a ‘not to be missed’ event,” ENMU Chancellor James Johnston said. “It will bring outstanding artists and experts to ENMU and our community. Students will benefit immediately from the master classes and mentorship.”

Two years ago "A Song For Ruth" mini-documentary was premiered in partnership with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. This film celebrated the life and career of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the DSO held a world premiere celebration. Truly a worldwide production.

What do you think changed with the industry that a filmmaker as talented and dedicated as you just can’t make the films that they want?

“Well, the industry is over,” Scorsese said….Studios, he said, are not “interested any longer in supporting individual voices that express their personal feelings or their personal thoughts and personal ideas and feelings on a big budget. And what’s happened now is that they’ve pigeonholed it to what they call indies.”

Now 80, the legendary director is on one of the most creative runs of his career— and consumed by the challenges (and opportunities) of all that he has left to do.

20 July 1969 - Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. In 2019 I interviewed on the Dreamers2Makers podcast author David Chudwin. His book "I was a Teenaged Space Reporter" chronicles his own experiences as a journalist in 1969.

My friend Pranvera Hyseni is a unstoppable force of nature. Her dream has been to build an astronomy observatory and planetarium for her home, the nation of Kosovo. Over the next several weeks I will be posting the rest of my podcasts that were originally broadcast in 2017 through 2019. As I reviewed and prepared the Substack queue, I’ve been reminded how diverse my interview subjects were back then. My one man band production team interviewed musicians, journalists, and filmmakers. I had no idea that COVID-19 was just about to emerge and I would find myself making documentary films and television. All of us that worked for decades as musicians had to find new and safe ways to continue our creative life when stages lowered their curtains.
