How many counties are there in the United States?

There are 3,141 counties and county equivalents in the 50 States and the District of Columbia:

• 3,007 entities named "County"
• 16 Boroughs in Alaska
• 11 Census Areas in Alaska
• 64 Parishes in Louisiana
• 42 Independent Cities (1 in Maryland, 1 in Missouri, 1 in Nevada, and the remainder in Virginia)
• 1 District - the Federal District or District of Columbia

These are the entities that control the voter registration & voting infrastructure in the USA, including the verification of voter identity and the initial receipt and processing of the ballots.

Largest: LA County in California – Population: 10,000,000
Smallest: Kalawao County in Hawaii – Population 88

Simply because of scale, some counties will take longer to complete their election related tasks than others. Also, each operates within one of at least 50 different State legislative environments. In some States, postmarks are considered in some States they are not. In some States mail-in ballots can be counted before election day but in some States they cannot. The variations are many.

Growing up in Buffalo, NY in the 50s, at this time of year neighborhoods were getting ready for their Voting Booths to arrive. These were green portable buildings, delivered on trucks, which served as polling places for elections. According to the Buffalo News, there were once over 400 of these portable polling places.

"In the weeks leading up to any election, city trucks would start hauling the green sheds around the city and dropping them off at the hundreds of predetermined intersections, often on the street, and causing a traffic hazard.

The green painted wooden booths were adorned with an American flag and a tin chimney for the cast-iron stove inside. They were already decades-old when a teamster was paid $10 a day, driving two horses, to set out the booths throughout city neighborhoods in 1928."

Provisional Ballots are sometimes used when Voters do not receive or lose an Absentee Ballot that they have requested:

1. You requested an Absentee Ballot, but never received it.
* Be patient! Don’t forget that the earliest Ballots will be mailed out is October 6th.
* If you are tired of waiting, your best option is to attempt to vote in-person. If the record at the polling site shows that an Absentee Ballot was sent to you, you will be required to use a Provisional Ballot, which , if properly completed, should be counted as long as your Absentee Ballot remains unused. RESULT: You Vote in-person via Provisional Ballot

2. You received an Absentee Ballot as you requested, but you lost it.
* Same solution as above. You can show up to vote in-person and the record at the polling site will show that an Absentee Ballot was sent to you, so you will be required to use a Provisional Ballot, which, if properly completed, will be counted as long as your Absentee Ballot remains unused. RESULT: You Vote in-person via Provisional Ballot

3. You received an Absentee Ballot as requested, and although you still have it, you do not want to use it.
* In this case, take the Absentee Ballot with you to the polls, or better yet to the County Clerk’s Office. They will void your Absentee Ballot, clearing your record to allow you to vote In-Person. RESULT: You Vote in-person via standard in-person ballot.

Although Provisional Ballots are not ideal, they can be requested in any situation where your registration record is challenged when voting in-person on election day.
