“The job of mayor… It is what you put into it,” he told the Herriman Journal. “I could spend a minimum amount of time and still be fulfilling my responsibilities. I like to be involved with as much as possible. I want to be face-to-face with people.”

What is a citizenship grade? What were the results from the school survey? Why is my teenager acting like this? Middle school students and their parents have a lot of questions. Fort Herriman Middle School staff members have a lot of answers, and they are sharing them through a series of videos.

Students can learn what their citizenship grade means, and parents can learn what’s going on in their adolescent’s brain, with informative videos made by FHMS staff members.

Like many projects, the Game Pointe development got derailed by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Now with that ordeal mostly in the rear-view mirror, is the project back on the burner? Not quite.

After plans for a 40,000 square foot family entertainment center fell through due to COVID-19, Herriman City and their development partner are looking at smaller options for the same area, like axe throwing or indoor mini golf.

Every year, Fort Herriman Middle School chooses a charity the student body will spend the month of December raising funds for. Last year they raised over $7,000 for Kauri Sue Hamilton School and Christmas for Kids. This year, in partnership with Mountain Ridge High School, they will be collecting donations for Hearts Knit Together, an organization which supports people escaping domestic violence, sexual abuse or war.

For a while, Herriman City Council members have bemoaned the fact that the city doesn’t have a high-level strategic plan. Some combination of governing principles, long-term goals and settled priorities to which they can turn when they have to make tough decisions. To that end, the city council and city department leaders met for a strategic planning discussion last month on Oct. 19.

The traditional letter-based grading system is being replaced with standards-based grading in Jordan District. Bastian Elementary is one of six schools piloting the program at the elementary level.

Teachers would give the district’s new grading system an A, but because they’re moving away from letter-based grading, they give it a 3.

Blackridge Reservoir is a favorite recreation destination for many in and outside of Herriman, but it’s also long been a source of headaches for Herriman staff and the neighborhood that surrounds it. Youth council members work closely with city leaders to plan service projects and help with city events. In the past, the council has grown a community garden, donating food to those in the city. The council also adopted Mountain View Corridor between 11800 South and 13400 South to keep that area clean.

The 2022-23 Herriman Youth Council is gearing up for another year of service, leadership opportunities and fun.

Beginning in April, Herriman City began publishing short videos on their social media channels recapping the most recent city council meeting. Each video features a communications staff member joined by a city council member, and together they talk about the most relevant information from the previous council meeting.

In a world of ever-present multimedia options and shortened attention spans, Herriman City is finding ways to still connect with residents and deliver useful information to them.

In May, the Salt Lake County Council stamped approval on a nearly 200 page West General Plan that took over 125 meetings across four years to create.

In the world of high school athletics, things usually go the way they’re supposed to go. It’s pretty common to see the top four seeds in the state tournament be the last remaining teams. Cinderella stories don’t come along too often. Which is what made Herriman High’s boys soccer team’s state championship run this year all the more special.

The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 5-8 record, and a 3-7 record in Region 3. At one point in the season, they lost seven games in a row.

Christian Richardson is a National Merit scholar finalist and State Math Sterling Scholar runner-up. He maintained a 4.0 GPA from seventh to 12th grade, scored a perfect 36 on the ACT and scored fives on every AP test he took.

The timing of the safety-focused event was appropriate, as it followed a week in which multiple pedestrians lost their lives on Utah roads.

Herriman City held its annual Pedal-Palooza event last month on May 14. Hundreds of residents came out to enjoy a beautiful Saturday morning full of bicycling, helmet giveaways and even a free bike raffle.

After decades of boys playing the sport in Utah, boys volleyball is official, and with a 10-4 vote, will now be a UHSAA-sanctioned sport beginning in the 2023-24 school year, joining the ranks with 25 other states nationwide.
