The necessary element to sharing faith with kids is often curiosity, questions, and wonder. In our latest Bible Study, Canon Sierra and Deacon Natalie talk about learning to WONDER through play with our children. One of our hopes through this podcast is to connect children to something bigger than ourselves. Yes, God, but also the years and years of tradition that has come to understand how Jesus moves through the world.

Our upcoming readings for Christmas and Epiphany dance between the historical, contextual, physical aspects of Jesus and the Spirit that burns through 1000 generations -- thanks to Star Wars for this quote. If you are looking to root your home in a sense of groundedness that goes beyond our understanding -- join us.

Bedtime Chapel's nightly prayer practice gives you a way to connect with as a family each night through prayer, and the weekly Bible Studies build up your capacity to explain scruipture to one another.

We just released our Bible Study for Christmastide and the beginning of Epiphany. It's such a delightful discussion of how to connect with God in the physical world, claim our unique experiences as essential to our understanding of God, and connect to the simple pleasure of being loved by God.

This conversation with the Rev. Aaron and Elizabeth Ross reminded me of the simplicity that undergirds prayer and the ease that comes when we are connected to Spirit. If you are looking for balm in a very busy season of life -- there's literally no one better to learn alongside than Elizabeth, whose

Parents and caregivers may be tempted to avoid conversations about violence - as if silence might spare our kids encounters with pain.

The Holy Innocents text we read tonight reminds us that the violence of empire is everywhere. While it may be uncomfortable to have conversations about suffering with our kids - it’s a state of the world that some parents don’t have the luxury of avoiding.

We can prepare kids to be present to pain and suffering by creating rhythms of grief and lament in our prayers. At our house we start by asking the kids, “Who can we pray for that’s hurting, knowing that God loves them dearly?”

If this is helpful to you, like the post and share the reel with your community. Add the people and places that you’re holding in prayer in the comments — we will pray with you tonight.

Thank you to our guest the Rev for his powerful observations about empire. Deacon Aaron serves at and graduated from . The articles we share in the reel come from .tv and . The prayer is from

In a world marked by violence, parents and caregivers face the daunting task of helping children process tragic events. Mass shootings, ongoing conflict in Palestine, and the genocide in Sudan are just a few of the heartaches that confront us far too often. As followers of Jesus, we have a model for responding to violence—one rooted in compassion, wisdom, and courage.

In light of the recent deaths in Madison, I’ve been reflecting on something our guest, Gary Commins, shared: "As a parent, and as a leader, so much of your role is responding. You like to think you're always guiding or initiating, but so much of what we do is reactionary. When it comes to stories of violence, kids often already have an awareness of it, shaped by their age and development. I can recall moments in my son’s life where I hadn’t prepared him [to encounter violence]."

Our role isn’t to shield children from the world’s brokenness but to guide them in understanding and responding to it. By studying how Jesus confronted violence—with honesty, resilience, and love—we can better prepare our kids to do the same.

If this resonates with you, I encourage you to listen to our conversations with Gary Commins. Across three episodes, we explored how parents can engage in these difficult yet crucial discussions. You can find all three episodes here: https://www.bedtimechapel.com/shownotes"

🙏 Give them the gift of joy and wonder in all your works 🙏

Some people have asked us why Bedtime Chapel uses an “adult” liturgy for a kids service … a few thoughts on this we wanted to share:

✨ we wanted to nourish wonder, an amazement and curiosity of things that are unknown and unfamiliar to us - this questioning and open mind is essential to lifelong growth - so we developed a service that doesn’t feel “normal”
💡 who’s to say they aren’t getting it? P, almost 3, is praying with us from memory and while she might not be able to explain what she’s saying, the words are certainly becoming part of her
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 the service is a family service - not a kids service - we wanted the service to be nourishing for intergenerational worship

God’s works draw us into beauty that is beyond this world — as caregivers we can form families that desire that beauty. Let Bedtime Chapel support you to form a family that centered on God.

There’s so much pressure in our world to be the best—the best parent, the best student, the best at work, the best on the field… It’s EXHAUSTING.

But here’s the good news: families and churches can offer an alternative. Instead of chasing perfection, we can center our lives on LOVE, KINDNESS, and SERVICE—reminding one another that we belong to each other.

If you’re wondering how to cultivate a family that truly lives this, don’t miss our latest Bible study with the Rev. Gary Commins, released on 12/07. Together, we explore Luke 22, where Jesus calls us to serve: “The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves."

Let’s build homes that love Jesus. Homes that love others. Homes that love service. ❤️

Bedtime Chapel releases a weekly Bible Study that follows along with the readings for night prayer. If you haven’t yet, check out the episode we released on 11/30 for the week of Advent 1 with Gary Commins

Gary, retired Episcopal priest, and Natalie met in 2014 through a mutual friend, Ranjit Koshy Mathews. They bonded over a shared hope for what the church could be if we got out of our own way and loved a little more boldly. Gary served in urban, suburban, bilingual, multicultural, and historically Black congregations, often transitioning aging parishes into younger, more diverse ones while working to create new community ministries.

We asked Gary to join us as our first guest and speaker because we have a huge respect for Gary’s faith, integrity, authenticity, and his wit. Even more than that, we have learned through our friendship that as much as he loves all of his roles, his role as a father is at the very top of the list. And in a podcast that’s looking to form kids in the home in their faith, we thought Gary would be a great guest.

As we prayed this Advent collect, we brought to mind and heart the people in our lives and in our world among whom we hope God will come.

We prayed for sick friends, for lonely family members, for war and grief-stricken countries, for injustices, for churches, for our kids, for our towns ... in each place, beckoning Jesus to bring peace and healing beyond our understanding.

What are you praying for right now? We want to share in your intercessions, thanksgivings, and petitions. Your prayer is our prayer.

In the busyness of life, why make time for family prayer? How might night prayer impact your family? And how might it impact the wider church?

In this special episode of Bedtime Chapel, James and Natalie share the hopes they have for the way Bedtime Chapel will support their home, your home, and the church community.

Audio from Post: "the way that I see it is that the future of our church relies on our ability to really decenter the people of privilege who are currently at the center of the church and to become more open to the people. Jesus was open to the voices and needs of people who are on the margin. And that can include and begin with truly centering and honoring children." Deacon Natalie"
