Inside the home of Donna and Gary Rich, the kitchen table is strewn with a variety of fresh, ripe tomatoes in shades of red, orange and yellow. Alongside the tomatoes are boxes of beans for eating and drying out as seeds. Also, they've acquired a rescue duck. Why? Find this and more is in our annual Harvest Edition.

They live on a one-acre plot of land in Novato, but the bounty they bring in feels abundant beyond the square footage they occupy. Inside the home of Donna and Gary Rich, the kitchen table is strewn with a variety of fresh, ripe tomatoes in shades of red, orange and yellow. Alongside the tomatoes ar...

For the second time in a year, San Rafael has evicted Mark Rivera, a disabled homeless man, from his camping spot on Mission Avenue. In response, Rivera filed a lawsuit and obtained a temporary restraining order from a U.S. District Court to prevent the city from ousting him. In the current lawsuit, Rivera claims the city breached the settlement agreement and that the eviction violated his civil rights. “The bigger picture is that the City of San Rafael broke the contract,” Rivera says to writer-at-large Nikki Silverstein. Get the entire backstory as the curious case moves forward. https://pacificsun.com/san-rafael-evicts-disabled-homeless-man-for-second-time-gets-sued-again/

Here’s a fun little discovery for you: In the “External Links” area of the Wikipedia entry for “West Marin,” the “official website” link clicks through to a moribund page promoting the Point Reyes National Seashore that appears to be run by a central coast marketing company (clearly not in an “official” capacity). And though the argument can be made that Pt. Reyes is the most western point of Marin — it’s certainly not all of West Marin. What, in the name of domain name squatting, is going on here? After you make that edit on Wikipedia, refresh your eyes with a gander at the work of Michael Knowlton, an accomplished plein air painter and longtime resident of Stinson Beach, who writer Isabella Cook profiles in this week’s cover story. It’s Autumn-ish—the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, as Keats would have it. But then, he never had to have it at a near-constant 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Nor did he have to endure the looming specter of pumpkin-spiced everything insinuating itself onto his calorie-counting app. Fall is not what it used to be—from climate to commercialism—but there’s a cornucopia of creativity en route to redeeming the moment, dutifully forecasted in our annual Fall Arts edition. https://pacificsun.com/sneak-peek-on-fall-arts/

“In the open spaces of Marin County, two remarkable women are weaving their life’s work into the regional tapestry,” writes Kurt Umbhau as he explores the work of Meredith Heller, a celebrated poet and educator, and Ayya Santacitta, a pioneering Buddhist nun and environmental advocate. Sure, their career paths are different but they share a calling to develop awareness that Earth is a living organism. https://pacificsun.com/verses-vows/

Local film lovers will not want to miss the upcoming screening of PLANETWALKER, a mini-documentary that outlines the story of one Point Reyes local, Dr. John Francis, who, following the 1971 oil spill in San Francisco, began a 22-year-long walk…17 years of which were taken in a vow of silence.

This one’s for the birds—specifically brown pelicans, which are starving and straining wildlife rescue resources due to various factors (looking at you, climate change). “Since April, from Monterey to Sonoma County, brown pelicans have been found starving and malnourished along the coast and in places where they are rarely, if ever, seen,” reports Cole Hersey in this week’s cover story. But it’s not all doom and gloom — rescuers recently nurtured 27 pelicans back to health and released them into the Bay. https://pacificsun.com/starving-brown-pelicans-strain-wildlife-rescue-centers/
