Reposted from @timewarpsj I recall when cruising became an issue in San Jose starting back when people cruised first st around St. James park down second street and turned around before 280 and back down first again. When it began on story and king roads it became a phenomenon with Lowrider cars from all over California heading on 101 freeway and getting off the off ramp just to sit in traffic. Wow! Something you had to experience to appreciate it. It didnβt matter if you had a Lowrider or not, people just came there to socialize, the biggest parking lots filled with people just admiring each otherβs cars. The cruising area exploded for blocks and backed up both the 101 and 280/680 freeways. Thatβs when police stepped in blocking the streets off to detour cars away from Story and King but it just spread to Welch or Hillview parks or somewhere else. When Disco East opened it was crazy and soon became the place to hangout in the parking lot. A few years later after city ordinance signs were placed and Disco East closed down, cruising moved to downtown Santa Clara street and the city posted no cruising zone signs there too. Now 40 later the move is on to repeal the ordinance and allow cruising again. Stay tuned for more to come as a final decision is near. Meantime get out a VOTE June 7th and this new cruise will need some encouragement from the community.
