The updated Peugeot 2008 has arrived in Australia, with a fresh look and a more efficient powertrain.
Revealed overseas in May 2023, the updated small crossover starts at $39,990 before on-road costs – up $1045 on last year’s model.
It has arrived here in two trims – Allure and GT – with Peugeot confirming the related electric E-2008 will arrive “at a later date”.
The switch from a six-speed to an eight-speed automatic transmission, previously limited in Australia to the more powerful but now defunct GT Sport, has resulted in reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Cody Rhodes pins Roman Reigns to win WWE Undisputed Universal Championship at WrestleMania 40 - https://www.cbctimes.com/?p=121619

WrestleMania 40 Night 2’s main event between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns was cinema and time, for most WWE fans, it had a happy ending.
Over a year in the making and up against the threat of Bloodline Rules, Rhodes was able to overcome it all with the help of some WWE legends and pin Reigns to win the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship for the first time in his career.

But it took a lot to get there. He and Seth Rollins lost to Reigns and The Rock during Night 1, meaning Bloodline Rules would be in effect for the main event in Night 2. Rhodes had just as much help as Reigns did in the match.

Former Quebec premier Jean Charest calls on Canadian leaders to clean up public debate - Montreal - https://www.cbctimes.com/?p=121617

Former Quebec Premier Jean Charest is concerned about what he says has been a rise in incivility across Canada.

In an open letter he co-signed with former mayors, senators, artists and business people, he calls on the political class to take concrete action to clean up public debate.
The letter published Tuesday in The Globe and Mail caused a stir on social media, Charest said in a telephone interview with The Canadian Press.
“The reaction is very strong. It stunned us. It surprised me a lot,” he said. “Some people are reacting poorly, seeing this call as a kind of call to silence, when that’s not the case at all.”
The letter authors contend Canadians are less tolerant of divergent points of view and are increasingly belligerent, particularly when it comes to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas.

How will Iran respond to Israel’s attack on its Damascus consulate? | Israel War on Gaza News - https://www.cbctimes.com/?p=121611

Iran has vowed retaliation for an Israeli attack on its consulate in Damascus last Monday.
The strike was part of a pattern of escalated Israeli attacks in Syria since the eruption of the Gaza war last October. These attacks have often targeted warehouses, trucks, and airports, and Israel’s declared aim for them is degrading Iran’s transnational supply network for the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
Monday’s attack was different, however, in that it struck a diplomatic facility – directly challenging Iran’s sovereignty – and killed senior leaders in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The most high-profile casualty was Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a veteran commander who led the IRGC foreign operations wing, the Quds Force, in Syria and Lebanon.
How will Iran respond? As it turns out, Tehran has a lot of options – but none

China’s Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao has said that the speedy rise of the country’s electric vehicle firms was not because of subsidies, but due to “constant innovations.”
The allegations about “overcapacity” by the U.S. and Europe are without merit, he said, state news agency Xinhua reported Monday. Wang also attributed China’s EV edge to “well-established supply chain system and market competition.”

Montreal marks six months since Israel-Hamas war - Montreal - https://www.cbctimes.com/?p=121606

Six bloody months, tens of thousands dead, more than a hundred still in captivity and thousands on the verge of famine.

It’s against this backdrop that hundreds turned out in separate events Sunday to mark six months since the October 7th attacks triggered the war between Israel and Hamas.
At an auditorium in Côte-des-Neiges where members of Montreal’s Jewish community gathered, Margaret Mankin remembers her nephew Omer Shem Tov.
“Who was captured on October 7th at the Nova music festival,” she told Global. “We’ve had very little news about him all this time.”
Federal Liberal MP Anthony Housefather says his mind is also on the hostages.
“I’ve been in direct touch with many of the families of the hostages,” he says. “I’ve met with many of them and they don’t sleep, they don’t eat.”

The Commonwealth Games Federation plans to announce a new host for the 2026 event next month, saying it has “multiple proposals” to replace Victoria.
The CGF on Monday said it was keeping the proposals confidential.
In July Victoria withdrew from plans to host the 2026 Games in three regional hubs, citing escalating costs.
“Significant progress has been made and we are excited by the early concepts, which aim to reset and reframe the Games,” the CGF said in a statement after its April meeting.
“We are working collaboratively with the relevant (members) to undertake further detailed assessments, and aim to announce the 2026 Commonwealth Games host in May.”
Victoria agreed to a compensation package with the CGF, which will help offset costs for the next host.

Canada adds Haiti evacuation flight next week after last-minute requests - https://www.cbctimes.com/?p=121593

Montreal — Canada will offer an additional evacuation flight out of Haiti next week due to a spike in the number of requests to flee the Caribbean country that poured in just as Canada was set to wind down its efforts, the federal government said Sunday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said in a message on X that officials logged numerous extra requests leading up to what was set to be the last scheduled government-sponsored flight out of the country.
“As our assisted departures out of Haiti came to a close, we saw an influx of last-minute requests for help,” she wrote on the social media platform on Sunday. “For those who missed today’s flight, we will have an additional flight this coming week.”
A government-organized flight left Sunday and was expected to be the last of three as Canada wound down its evacuation efforts in Haiti, which is contending wit

Treasurer Rita Saffioti: Captain’s challenge to umpires worth ‘considering’ after Dockers robbed by Carlton - https://www.cbctimes.com/?p=121591

Treasurer Rita Saffioti believes a captain’s review for lineball AFL umpiring calls is worth considering as she spent a second day venting her anger over the twin decisions that wrecked the Fremantle Dockers undefeated start to 2024.
The AFL has already admitted umpires “missed” the ball ricocheting off the arm of Dockers defender Jordan Clark on the way to being marked by Carlton’s Matthew Cottrell for a goal that put the Blues into the lead with less than a minute to play.
The mistake was compounded by a controversial free kick awarded against Clark for dissent — despite the Docker insisting he was swearing at himself — that handed Cottrell a second kick at goal to push his side’s lead out to an insurmountable 10 points.
The debacle prompted former St Kilda star Leigh Montagna to call for the introduction of a single p

Deepfake identity theft is at our doorstep
Fake AI pictures and videos will be nearly impossible to discern from real images as the technology behind deepfakes advances, University of California, Berkeley professor says.

A Wisconsin man is facing decades behind bars for a 36-year identity theft scheme in which the victim was sent to jail and even a mental hospital because authorities did not believe his story.

In 2019, the victim, William Woods, was homeless man living in Los Angeles when he found out someone was racking up debt using his name. Woods walked into a California bank, said he didn’t’ want to pay, and tried to close the accounts that Keirans had opened in his name.

The 2024 solar eclipse is bringing attention — and tourism to New Brunswick.

The CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of New Brunswick (TIANB), Luis Cardoso, said he knows about people travelling to the event from Brazil.
“It’s already impacted tourism, we have people coming from all over the world to New Brunswick to see it,” he said.
That tourism is bringing business — like the Delta Hotels by Marriott in Fredericton, where reservations are nearly full on Sunday and later into the week.
“It’s certainly great for this time of year,” the hotel’s general manager, Sara Holyoke said.

RCG dodges ban in boost for under-pressure Eels - https://www.cbctimes.com/?p=121584

Under-pressure Parramatta have breathed a sigh of relief after prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard avoided suspension despite being placed on report twice during the loss to Canberra.
Campbell-Gillard laid two high tackles in the final five minutes of the Eels’ 41-8 loss on Sunday evening as frustrations boiled over.
The State of Origin prop appeared at risk of suspension for the first of those, which saw him make shoulder-to-head contact with Raiders utility Simi Sasagi.
The 14th-placed Eels could ill have afforded to lose Campbell-Gillard given their ongoing struggles without injured halfback Mitch Moses.
Parramatta have lost both games since Moses fractured his foot and may have to contend without him for as many as six more weeks.
But on Monday the match review committee handed Campbell-Gillard only a grade-one careless high tackle charge, meaning he can escape suspension with a $1800 fine.

Regina’s mayor said the city will be adding an elevator to an aquatic centre design to make the new facility’s waterslide accessible.

The new aquatic centre is currently in the design phase and will be built in the Taylor Fields land behind the Lawson Centre.
“It will be put into the design phase and so it won’t be an add on after the fact,” Regina mayor Sandra Masters said. “We know that it’s going to have a very high ceiling and so the idea is that you put an elevator in there to access the second level which will then be able to access the high waterslide.”

The chief executive of Aon, one of the world’s largest insurance brokers, has called for better modelling of climate risks, saying conditions in the property insurance market were “stressed” after a surge in claims from extreme weather.
Home insurance is becoming increasingly unaffordable in areas such as California and Australia, as global warming has made storms, floods and wildfires more frequent and severe. The problems have been partly driven by a pullback by reinsurers, whose contracts sharing the costs of catastrophe payouts underpin the property insurance market.

The City of White Rock is considering adding CCTV cameras in public places to increase public safety and deter crime.
