Meet Niko Villa. Community Partner 002. ☕️🐻

“Niko is an EOP Counselor from Southeast San Diego. A two-time alum of San Diego State University, and has started his career in student affairs at SDSU in 2020. He truly believes that education is the key to opening doors that may have been non-existent, and education will continue to be that key because it changes one's trajectory. This is his foundation of love for helping students, families, and the community. Niko works with diverse college student populations and youth inside and outside the classroom. His professional interests include outreach, access, and retention programs for underrepresented students. Niko prides himself on self-care, community care, and mentorship.

Advice: As a counselor/educator, you have to expect the fullness of your promise to match the intention behind the work you put into it. The size of the effort gotta match the size of your dream. Students do not simply see you as the “Counselor” you are a collaborator to their story. Your job isn’t to create a version of yourself or direct their future. Your role is to be a facilitator to their hopes, wishes, and dream. You are the older brother or sister, and even the parental figure in their life. The strength and talents you bring to the table are not for you. What we do is not for us. It’s not about us. As educators we are here to bring dignity, to represent, to expand, to push forward. You have to look at from the the perspective of being in such a unique position and that responsibility, you must elevate your craft. You have to represent, and you are paving a way.”

The claw marks in the “B” represents imperfection. It’s a constant reminder that we all have things we can continue to work on (our vices) and that life is far from perfect. Take ownership of it and appreciate the good and bad moments that life gifts you, as these moments continue to shape us. It’s a constant battle to find happiness and there’s beauty in the process whether people are in your corner rooting for you or not. Double down and invest in yourself and find what makes you happy in life.

FAQ- What is The Brew Inn?

The Brew Inn was the name of my last apartment. It’s wordplay from my favorite basketball team’s mascot growing up, the UCLA bruin bear. I got the word “Brew” from being a huge beer enthusiast in my late 20’s. The word “Inn” is a place people go for lodging and food. It made sense to me as it was a place where something was always brewing when we got together. Over the 5 years, The Brew Inn grew to become more than just that. ☕️🐻

It was a place where my friends and family went to connect, engage, grow, heal, and go to feel safe. That's the mission of the brand/podcast whenever people are wearing the clothing or on an episode of the podcast, a feeling of “home.” I was able to obtain testimonials from reoccurring guests and asked them what The Brew Inn was for them and if they could share some of their experiences.
