Cane someone please explain to me WHY the entire San Bernardino Mountains area of the San Bernardino National Forest has been closed to public access. Attention D14 deer hunters, attention Lytle Creek anglers, attention hikers, birders, picnickers, mountain bikers, campers, and anyone else who uses the forest. Please share, the SBNF has more and larger closures of our public lands than any other forest in the region -- and they are doing it without scientific evidence or even any remotely rational reasoning. PLEASE SHARE WITH ANYONE IMPACTED.

I wanted to thank each and every one of the folks who attended the 2024 summer seminar series this year, and I hope it will help you find birds this fall and inspire you to hunt more and bring more hunters into this great tradition. I am always available to help all of you in your efforts. Don't ever hesitate to call, text, or e-mail me.

I'd also want to thanks Andy McCormick at Legacy Sports International for the donation of three Pointer over-and-under shotguns for the seminars, along with Turner's Outdoorsman, Bass Pro Shops - Rancho Cucamonga, CA, and Mike Raahauge Shooting Enterprises for hosting these event this year. It is inspiring to see the commitment from these companies to help grow hunter numbers and help retain hunters in this state and in this era.

As I said in all my seminars, the number of California hunters had declined from about 850,000 around 1970 when the state's population was 20 million to 250,000 today, when the state's population has recently exceeded 40 million. For hunting to continue into the future, we need to grow our sport, and we can do that by opening our doors of information and knowledge, not closing them. This is our effort to help do just that.

The graph below shows the water level of a critical bighorn sheep drinker in the East Mojave Desert. The Bee Gee drinker is going dry and the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep is planning an emergency trip this coming weekend to fill the drinker. Volunteers with four-wheel drive trucks are needed to haul water and equipment to the drinker. I've attached a letter describing the operation below. The operation is headed up by Steve Marschke ([email protected]) and Scott Gibson ([email protected]), and if you'd like to help out, contact either of them. This is the kind of on-the-ground, sweat equity that it takes to keep sheep on our landscape these days. Volunteers are doing the job the state and federal wildlife agencies should be doing. But this is what it has come to today. Here's the info:

"SCBS members and volunteers,

"It's been hot and it's predicted to remain that way and the bighorn have been consuming the water. We expect only a couple weeks and this system will run dry which we can't allow if it is within our means to prevent it.

"Summary:
what: water hauling effort by truck for bighorn guzzler
Where: Basin exit from Interstate 15, near Baker CA
when: Anytime Friday afternoon at DFW Camp Cady. Saturday August 10th 7 am at Baker National Park Service Yard or 8 am at Basin Road exit.

"Scott and I are co-leading this effort. Scott will bring pump and hoses, I will stage on Friday at Camp Cady for those that need to borrow a tank or just want to shorten up their early morning drive.

"The reports are that the last 1/2 mile or so has washed out (again) so we'll have to do some handwork to get the trail into passable shape. There will be some dirt work with hand tools and rolling boulders. If you haven't been to this site previously you will get to traverse just about every style of desert trail, wash running, loose sandy patches, lava bombs and twisty wash crawling. 4x4 , high clearance, some experience choosing a good line, and a little bit of luck should get you through without trouble. A trusted passenger to spot the right side or move a few boulders helps out immensely.

"Bring your hot weather gear - hats, sunscreen, air conditioning, cooler, etc. Sorry the weather is expected to be about 110 to 115 F; but it doesn't look like we can afford to wait. Hopefully we will be able to finish before the temperature reaches the maximum.

"If you can help out we'll mainly need water hauling pickups but even if your rig can't haul water we'll need some people that are more maneuverable at the front of the line to help with the trail repairs.

"If you need to borrow a cube style tank, you'll want to come out to Camp Cady on Friday and we can help you load up. Bring your tie down straps - big ones or several. If you have your own tank, then you know the drill and can meet us either at NPS yard in Baker to fill up (extra 15 miles each way) or meet at the Basin Road exit if you have alternative means of getting water.

"Please RSVP so we know who is coming and where to expect you. We'll give you more detailed directions.

"Thanks,
Steve Marschke"

Typical National Forest BS:

Much of the Lytle Creek drainage is now closed through Oct. 31 under a forest order (below) related to the Vista Fire which is nearly contained and burning only in wilderness. This will impact all recreational users who picnic along the stream, hikers, and hunters. The extent and duration of the closure is just moronic. Look at the map with this post. I highly recommend that people complain about this closure and its size. These are OUR public lands. Go to the San Benardino National Forest website (https://www.fs.usda.gov/sbnf) and either call or go to the "Contact Us" button at the bottom of the opening page and file a written complain. For D11 deer hunters, if the USFS does reopening the drainage on Oct. 31, that would only leave hunting (and no scouting from now until then) the final weekend of the deer season. Here's text of the news release about the Forest Order:

"The purpose of the order is for public safety. The fire closure area is targeted at key access routes and area control for fire patrol, suppression repair and monitoring. The closure area is necessary to help ensure that no one is injured within the fire perimeter or surrounding area and that firefighting personnel can safely access the area.

"Several Forest Service roads and trails, including the Pacific Crest Trail, are affected by the closure. Recreation sites in the fire area within the San Bernardino National Forest are closed, including: Applewhite Campground, Applewhite Picnic Area, Bonita Falls Day Use Site and Bonita Falls.

"The order prohibits several activities, including:

-- Going into or being upon any National Forest System lands within the Vista Fire Closure Area, as described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibit B, which is the map.
-- Being on any National Forest System Road within the Vista Fire Closure Area, as listed in Exhibit C and shown on Exhibit B, which is the map.
-- Being on any National Forest System Trail within the Vista Fire Closure Area, as listed in Exhibit C and shown on Exhibit B, which is the map.

"A violation of prohibitions described in the order are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both."
