🎆As we kick off this brand new year, let’s make a resolution to dive into some amazing books that will inspire, entertain, and uplift us! All while supporting the gente! 📚✨ Here are five great reads to add to your 2024 reading list:
1. I Am Diosa by Christine Guiterrez. “In this fiercely inspiring book from a fresh new voice in the women’s empowerment space, psychotherapist Christine Gutierrez welcomes women to join her in healing the wounds from past hurt or trauma to reclaim their worth and come back home to their true self and soul.”
2. Ese to Master Jefe by Raul R. Ramos. “Raul’s story reminds us that we are in control of our lives – and success is not pre-determined. As a young boy, Raul joined a hardcore street gang and faced profound adversity and obstacles. Yet, he never let his past destroy his future. In fact, he managed to rise to the top of military ranks.”
3. ¡Ándale Prieta! by Yasmin Ramirez. “Set in El Paso, Yasmín shares her experience in the border and how that shaped her as a person. The border city has a diversity of cultures and a sense of home she cannot find anywhere else. ¡Ándale, Prieta! shows the bond between a grandmother and granddaughter, and explores the grief of losing it.”
4. Answer the Call by Jorge V. Gonzalez. “In his #1 bestselling book, Answer The Call: Life Lessons From Family Origins Through Invention And Struggle, Jorge Gonzalez shares his personal journey of reinvention and offers practical insights on how you can do the same. After spending two decades perfecting his craft, Jorge was faced with a disability that left him unable to continue working in his chosen field. But rather than succumbing to anger and grief, he drew inspiration from his family’s legacy of taking calculated risks and pursued a new path forward.”
5. Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno Garcia. “The story follows Casiopea Tun, who, in an attempt to escape her grandfather’s home, inadvertently links up with a Mayan god eager to take back his throne. Soon she finds herself on a death-defying adventure, and experiencing the equally terrifying prospect of first love.”

Born in 1909, Arcadia Hernández López was a pioneer in the field of bilingual education. Born in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo León, Mexico, her family fled the Mexican Revolution and arrived in San Antonio around 1913. She served in the San Antonio Independent School District as a teacher for 33 years, and then as the district’s coordinator of bilingual programs for 13 years. As someone who struggled with the antiquated sink-or-swim-style of learning English in San Antonio public schools, López was inspired to create innovative bilingual education programs. After graduating from Main Avenue High School (Fox Tech High School), she earned a bachelor’s in education and mathematics in 1934, and a master’s in education from the University of Texas at Austin in 1938. Among her many accolades, López receieved the Ladies LULAC’s 1980 Woman of the Year Award, was inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame in 1989, and won the Ford Salute to Education award in 1993.

🌹🌟 Hola Gente! Do you know the history about el Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe! 🌟🌹

🌺 Juan Diego, an indigenous man, living at the time of the Spanish conquest of Mexico, was visited by an apparition when he was walking on a hill named Tepeyac, on December 9, 1531. The apparition is described as a young woman with black hair and darkened skin, which is why the Virgin Guadalupe is sometimes referred to as “la virgen morena”. In his vision, he was told to build a giant church exactly where he stood. According to the story of the Lady of Guadalupe, Mary spoke in the Nahuatl language when she appeared to Diego. It is said that millions of indigenous people in Mexico were converted to Catholicism as a result of her appearance. Today, this is where the Basilica of Guadalupe is located. 🌍❤️

💃🏽 This day is filled with vibrant festivities, colorful processions, and joyful music. People dress in traditional attire, listen to mariachi, participate in parades, and eat traditional food. It’s a true fiesta for the senses! 🎶🎊

🙏🏽 Beyond the festivities, Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe is a time for reflection and devotion. Many believers make pilgrimages to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, where the original image of the Virgin Mary is housed. It’s a beautiful testament. 🙌🏽✨

So, a couple days ago I googled myself, as one does, and discovered someone wrote a paper for a chicano studies class off of the podcast! My numbers aren’t huge, Im not a monetized show, I do it out of pure passion for the culture! Things like this are the reason I started the podcast, to teach, share stories, and get others to better understand what being a Chicano means to myself and others! I really wish I knew who wrote this, if you’re seeing this, you have no idea how much more motivation you just gave me! 🤎✊🏽

Have you seen todays Google Doodle?! San Antonio 🙌🏽
🎙️Raoul Cortez is a true pioneer of Spanish language radio and television in the United States. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1905, he came to San Antonio at an early age to seek his fortune, working first as a reporter for La Prensa newspaper and also as a salesman for the Pearl Brewing Company.
In the 1930s and 40s Cortez owned and operated a Theatrical Agency that introduced top Mexican and Latin American entertainers to the U.S. In 1940 he began buying airtime on KMAC Radio and producing Spanish variety hours for the station. In 1944 Cortez applied for a license to open his own radio station. To get around wartime restrictions on foreign language media, he stated that part of the station’s purpose was to mobilize the Mexican-American community behind the war effort.
In 1946 KCOR-AM went on the air…. the first full-time Spanish language radio station in the country owned and operated by a Hispanic. It is still on the air today with the same call letters that bear a portion of his last name. Cortez also formed the "Sombrero" radio network…a chain of stations across the country that banded together in order to improve and promote radio broadcasts.
In 1955 Cortez expanded his broadcasting operations to include television when he launched KCOR-TV Channel 41. This was the first television station aimed solely at the Hispanic market, as well as the first UHF station.
Cortez passed away in 1971. In 1981 the City of San Antonio named the Raoul A. Cortez Branch Library in recognition of his accomplishments. In 2006 the National Association of Broadcasters gave its Spirit of Broadcasting Award jointly to Cortez and his son-in-law, Emilio Nicolas. In 2007 the professional publication, Radio Ink, created the Medallas de Cortez Hispanic Radio Award to recognize outstanding achievement and leadership in Hispanic radio.
Mr. Cortez is included in an exhibit recently opened at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History entitled “American Enterprise” … the story of innovation in American business history.
