On this day 55 years ago, then-Staff Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez, while assigned to Detachment B56, 5th Special Forces Group - Airborne in Vietnam, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty by a “series of daring and extremely valorous actions…expos[ing] himself constantly to withering enemy fire, and his refusal to be stopped despite numerous severe wounds, saved the lives of at least eight men.” Benavides would retire at the rank of Master Sgt. and was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 24th, 1981.
