Gil’s Restaurant Announces Relocation After Nearly Two Decades in San Angelo

San Angelo Soup Business Report
By Matt CutrerFriday
12/20/24

SAN ANGELO, TX — After nearly 20 years at its current location on Knickerbocker Road, Gil’s Restaurant is moving. The beloved, family-owned Mexican eatery will close its doors at 837 Knickerbocker Rd. on December 29, 2024, and plans to reopen at a larger venue at 3020 N. Chadbourne. The reopening date has yet to be announced.

The Garcia family, who have owned and operated Gil’s for over two decades, credits their success to a strong sense of community—both among staff and customers. Jason Garcia, the owner, said that everyone working at Gil’s is either family or feels like family, which has helped foster the restaurant’s close-knit atmosphere. The warm, welcoming vibe, especially during breakfast, has made it a favorite among locals.

Jason explained that his parents, who have extensive experience in the restaurant business in San Angelo, were the driving force behind the establishment’s early success. He said their dedication to the restaurant and to the community has been integral to Gil’s growth.

The decision to relocate comes after 19 years at the current Knickerbocker location. Jason Garcia acknowledged that while it’s always difficult to move on, sometimes change is necessary. “Sometimes, things just don’t work out, and sometimes you have to take an alternative path,” he said.

The new location on Chadbourne Street, which is significantly larger, will allow Gil’s to accommodate larger parties and better serve both regulars and new customers. Jason is optimistic that the move will allow the restaurant to continue growing and making new memories with its loyal patrons.

Gil’s has long been a cornerstone of San Angelo’s dining scene and, despite the move, the Garcia family is committed to remaining a town favorite. As they prepare for their next chapter, the restaurant's loyal customers can look forward to an expanded dining experience in 2025 at the new Chadbourne location.

We bid a heartfelt farewell to Gil’s on Knickerbocker and look forward to celebrating its continued success at its new home.

SAN ANGELO, TX — Local Business Owner Juggles Three Jobs to Achieve American Dream
By: Matt Cutrer
12/17/24

Lisa Hernandez Casillas, a small business owner in San Angelo, has become a beloved figure in the community, known for her strong work ethic, magnetic personality, and relentless determination to build her own American dream.

While initially the story centered around Casillas’ decision to treat her employees to an all-expenses-paid casino trip, it quickly evolved into a profile of a woman who worked tirelessly to create a thriving business. Her journey to success was not handed to her; rather, it was earned through hard work, resilience, and a deep commitment to her community.

Casillas, 50, has worked multiple jobs throughout her life. Currently, she holds three positions. She has been employed with Walgreens in downtown San Angelo for 27 years, primarily for the health benefits. Additionally, she does voice work for advertisements at a local Hispanic radio station.

Her path to business ownership began in Chicago, where she started working for Walgreens in 1999. In 2007, she transferred to the company’s San Angelo location on Abe Street. Tragically, her husband passed away in 2013, a loss that prompted her to take on a second job at a local bar called Eva's. She worked there from 2013 to 2015, gaining valuable experience in the bar business and learning the ins and outs of bar management.

“I always knew I wanted to own a bar,” Casillas said. “After working in the industry for so many years, I knew I could create something special— a place that felt like home for both customers and employees. I wanted to build a thriving business with a culture of appreciation.”

In 2015, Casillas took a bold step and purchased the bar, renaming it Lisa’z Bar. Since then, it has become a cornerstone of the community, known for its warm atmosphere and a focus on both customer and employee satisfaction. Casillas says she’s passionate about providing her employees with a stable, enjoyable work environment where they feel valued.

"I believe hard work pays off, and people with strong work ethics deserve to be appreciated," Casillas said. "At Walgreens, the most recognition I got was a pat on the back. I wanted to create something where people feel truly valued."

Casillas has made a huge impact on the community with her generosity and genuine care for others earning her the respect and admiration of patrons, employees, and Concho Valley business people and residents.

Lisa Hernandez Casillas exemplifies the spirit of West Texas— resilient, hardworking, and community-focused. Through her perseverance, she has not only achieved her own American dream but has also made a lasting impact on the people of San Angelo.

In an often confusing, challenging and divisive world, Casillas’ success serves as a reminder of the power of kindness, dedication, and a willingness to give back. Perhaps we should be more like Lisa Casillas. We might be surprised to find out that these were the missing/secret ingredients to success all along.

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo bar owner recently surprised her employees with an all-expenses-paid getaway to Winstar Casino in Oklahoma, showing appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

Lisa Hernandez Casillas, the owner of Lisa’z Bar, located at 1002 Martin Luther King Dr., organized the three-day trip for 10 of her 12 employees, each allowed to bring a guest.

The trip included a John Legend concert, a high-end dining experience at Toby Keith’s restaurant, and a night of fun at the casino’s nightclub. Casillas covered the full cost, including travel, hotel accommodations, concert tickets, and other expenses.

Casillas, who transformed her Northside bar into a popular nightlife destination, said the gesture was her way of acknowledging her staff’s contributions. The bar, known for its competitive drink specials and vibrant atmosphere, has quickly become a staple in the local scene.

“I’ve worked at Walgreens downtown San Angelo for over two decades, and saw many people come and go,” Casillas said. “I felt like good employees deserve more than just a ‘thank you.’ Now that I own my own business, I want to create a workplace where employees feel valued and enjoy coming to work.”

Lisa’z Bar, which continues to draw large crowds, is known for its fun environment and loyal team. Casillas hopes the vacation will strengthen her bond with her staff, ensuring they remain motivated and committed to the business in the years to come.
