-Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.

-Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.

-If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child's costume, make sure it is not sharp or long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.

-Review with children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they ever have an emergency or become lost.

FREEZING WEATHER TIPS FROM YOUR PUBLIC WORKS DEPT | CONSEJOS SOBRE CLIMA HELADO DE SU DEPT DE OBRAS PÚBLICAS

Here are a few basic tips for preparing for or recovering from freezing weather:
--- Insulate pipes that may be vulnerable to the cold, or that have caused problems before.
--- Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer room temperatures.
--- Crack open a faucet the farthest away from the place where your water enters the house. Running water - even a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing because the temperature of running water is above the freezing level.
--- Much of your plumbing is in the crawl space under your home; be sure the foundation vents are closed. Replacement Styrofoam inserts can be purchased from most hardware stores/hardware departments.
--- Keep your water meter box lid closed to help keep the meter from freezing. Report broken or missing lids by calling 503-838-1212.
--- Remove, drain and store your garden hoses. Wrap or cover the spigots.
--- Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night. Keeping your house, a little warmer at night may increase your heating bill, but it will help avoid costly repairs due to a burst pipe.
--- Keep your garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines inside (to a water heater or washing machine, for example).
--- DON’T use your oven to heat your home. The same is true for a charcoal or wood barbecue—the smoke contains carbon monoxide and can be fatal.
--- If you plan an extended vacation during cold weather, call City Hall (503-838-1212) to have the water meter turned off. Then, drain your water pipes and turn off your water heater and other water-using devices.
