Words move the soul in ways that can move a nation (Castelli).

Alyssa Dufort, a freshman majoring in clinical counseling psychology, has had a beautiful talent since eighth grade for writing poetry.

“Poetry makes me feel like I don’t have limitations or barriers,” said Dufort. “Sometimes I take a while to start writing, though once I do, I’m flying.”

Although Dufort enjoys experimenting with many styles, her most written themes are fantasy, historical inspiration, and reflections on her own experiences.

Since Dufort is on the spectrum, and communicating with others may be hard sometimes, she expresses the words through sophisticated writing, using poetry as a shooting mechanism.

“For some miraculous reason, when I try to express myself with a pattern or rhyme, it’s easier,” said Dufort.

Poetry's ability to represent an idea in a hundred various ways is what makes it so beautiful, and if someone wants to write, remember that “you can find inspiration from anything, anywhere,” said Dufort.

Last Monday, Saint Leo residents witnessed a breathtaking eclipse, a rare experience they won't have again for almost 20 years.

In order to engage Saint Leo students, the Saint Leo Astronomy Club hosted a viewing event for the unique solar eclipse at the Bowl on Monday, April 8.

When the Sun, Moon, and Earth align, the Moon casts its shadow on our planet, and when the Moon covers the Sun completely, the sky darkens (total eclipse), revealing only the Sun's corona.

In addition to the other fascinating events, the Astronomy Club plans a trip to the JFK Center and a future meeting with the St. Pete Astronomy Club on April 18 at 7 p.m.

Join the club by contacting Dr. Harsha Perera, the club's faculty advisor and assistant professor of physics and physical sciences, at [email protected].

Grey’s Anatomy has released another season!

Last month, on March 14, the first episode of the 20th Grey’s Anatomy series was released, and every Thursday night they released a new one until the season was complete.

A different set of interns than the ones the show began with are followed in this new season, but Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is still very present.

This season promises a lot of fascinating medical procedures, tramas, and throwbacks to past seasons.

Fans favorite characters, such as Dr. Richard Webber, Dr. Teddy Altman, and Dr. Miranda Bailey, make appearances in the 20th season.

The new Grey's Anatomy season has received few complaints, with most of them being that it has become too political and deviated from its original fanbase.

Even so, the show is still very loved and popular. Are you a fan of Grey’s Anatomy? Share in the comments below how you feel about the direction the series has taken!

2 weeks until the end of the semester…

With finals fast approaching, remembering to step outside and relax in nature may seem impossible, but the Treehouse Club reassures the importance of it.

The Treehouse Club, established in spring last year, aims to connect and support ecology students through weekly meetings and community-focused projects. They take care of nature just as it takes care of us.

Besides that, they affirm that spending time outdoors is beneficial to students, as it “allows you to become in tune with yourself again,” said the Executive Coordinator, Chole Farr, a senior majoring in general biology.

Both Farr and Luisangel Godinez, a senior majoring in biochemistry and founder of the Treehouse Club, say that spending time with nature helps us escape mental stress and restart the brain.

Thus, do not be afraid to take a walk and enjoy the beautiful nature view of Saint Leo University.

"My health, my right."

This was the chosen theme for the 2024 World Health Day, which happened yesterday, April 7, and it represents everybody’s right to quality health information access. .

A well-balanced diet is highly important for everybody’s health, but keeping healthy eating habits may be challenging for college students.

With that in mind, Saint Leo University’s dining service started to work harder to offer a wider variety of healthy food to students.

Even so, some students still feel that the dining service is not perfect.

“When it comes to drinks, there only seems to be soda, sugary drinks, and water,” said Malina Shrestha, a freshman majoring in social work. “Having fresh juice and more healthy drink options will increase the satisfaction of students.”

Although there are still some improvements to be made, dining services continue to work hard to provide students with healthier food and drink options.

Art has always been a way for humans to express their feelings and their impressions of the world around them.

Throughout the years, many artistic movements were developed, such as Impressionism.

Impressionism was a French movement during the nineteenth century that was known for its visible brush strokes, nature scenes, and light aesthetic.

With that in mind, the Dali Museum in Saint Petersburg, is showcasing an Impressionism exhibition until April 28 for every art enthusiast that wants to “travel in time” and see breathtaking art pieces.

The exhibition places a strong emphasis on teaching visitors about the surprising relationship that exists between Impressionism and Salvador Dali, the main subject of the museum.

Have you ever questioned yourself about whether God is alive?

In order to clarify and educate people on this important topic, Dr. Rice Broocks wrote the “God’s Not Dead: Evidence for God in an Age of Uncertainty” book.

Broocks and Dr. Eric Hedin, professor of physics at the University of Washington, visited over 40 nations to discuss the true existence of God.

With that, on Feb. 27, they came to Saint Leo University to host an amazing event to demonstrate why and how God is alive, showing true evidence of his existence.

Broocks and Hedin started their presentation with the beginning: God and the creation of the world. They pointed out reasons why the world’s condition of life is perfect and how that perfection is claimed by a perfect creator.

They followed by pointing out other reasons that show that God is not dead, and every attendant was amazed by their arguments and explanations.

To finalize, they ended the event by praying with the audience and distributing everyone a complimentary copy of “God’s Not Dead.”

The spring break is an important week for college students since it is the time to relax and recover from the midterms.

However, many students feel anxious and present a lack of focus when returning to classes after the break.

With that, some people agree that universities should offer post-spring break support programs and activities to assist students in their transition back to classes.

These initiatives would benefit students in many ways, as they would feel heard, valued, and encouraged.

“I think that the university should definitely implement support services for students that haven’t mastered the art of transitioning back to the reality of school after spring break,” said Raygan Nairn, a junior majoring in business marketing (Smith).

Thus, through these initiatives, colleges may show their dedication to student success and foster a vibrant campus community by funding these support programs.

On March 17, the festive Irish holiday, St. Patrick’s Day, is celebrated throughout the whole world.

In order to honor St. Patrick, who brought Christianity to Ireland, Irish people organize festivals and parades every March 17.

In Ireland, the commemoration consists of traditional Irish music, dance performances, and food, but in other countries, this celebration is adapted to each culture.

In the United States, for example, Americans drink and wear green during the holiday.

“The only thing I’ve ever done to really celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is wear green," said Hennessy Franco, a freshman majoring in business management. (McGregor).

Therefore, as St. Patrick's Day became a global phenomenon, each culture developed its own unique way to celebrate it.

Everyone knows midterms can drain and stress students, so as the midterm season ends, it is important that students relax, but how?

There are many ways students can release their stress. One of them is meditation.

Allowing yourself to take a moment to focus on your present mind and body while washing away any and every stressful thought promotes meaningful relaxation.

Another thing that can be done is exercise. Find a physical activity that you enjoy and spend some time doing it. Exercises release endorphins, so you will naturally feel better afterwards.

Self-care, such as a spa day, is another way students can recover their peace after midterms.

There are many other interesting ways to release stress, and you can get to know all of them through Smith’s article.

03/12/2024

The Lenten season represents the 40 days and 40 nights that Jesus spent praying and fasting in preparation for his death.

Since he was crucified for us, the tradition of praying, fasting, and almsgiving was established by Catholics in order to strengthen our relationship with God and thank Him for His sacrifice.

We can see the Lenten season being commemorated by many of Saint Leo’s students.

“It’s something we all need,” said Eric Brener Rocha Campos, a freshman majoring in secondary education (Lynn). “I am going to give myself more time in prayer than I had before.”

Furthermore, you do not have to fully give up on food in order to fast. Simple sacrifices, such as quitting eating sweets, can also be considered fasting, which is exactly what Emily Shute, a sophomore majoring in political science, wants to do.

Lenten is the season of sacrifice and prayer, so we can prepare ourselves for Easter.

During the past few years, Americans started to critically think about the age of the members of the political office.

While everyone’s voice should be heard, it is a fact that the older a person is, the lower their mental capacity is, and that should be considered.

The decision to establish an age limit for political office is undoubtedly complex, but the majority of U.S. Democrats and Republicans seem to agree with it — 76% of Democrats and 82% of Republicans.

In fact, it is crucial to consider the pros, cons, and other alternatives before making such an impactful decision for the U.S. and the world.

On Feb. 29, the Saint Leo University Ministry organized an impactful Eucharistic Revival event.

Eucharistic Revival events emerged when the Catholic Church realized that many Christians did not fully comprehend the meaning and power of the Eucharistic in order to inspire and educate those believers.

With that, Saint Leo University Ministry invited Blessed Carlos Acutis to present and explain Eucharistic miracles to both Catholics and non-Catholics who were there.

After a contemplative QSA session, attendees participated in a Eucharistic procession to Saint Leo Abbey, symbolizing unity in faith.

This event impacted all the participants, regardless of their faith, promoting reflection on the meaning and importance of the Eucharist.

The will of worshiping the Lord moved the Pastor Mike D’Ambrosio, mayor of the town of Saint Leo and Chief of University Safety and Management, to start a new church here on campus.

On Feb. 4, the Truth Seekers Church had the pleasure to have its first service, which took place in Selby Auditorium.

Pastor D’Ambrosio and the church staff ensured the students and the community felt welcome and overwhelmed by love, so they could be encouraged to grow their faith and become closer to Christ.

Along with that, Pastor D’Ambrosio shared his story about how he created a tight relationship with Jesus, and the message touched many students.

“Something he said resonated with me and made me think of my aunt and close friend who recently passed away,” said Luigi Meschino, a sophomore political science major (Lynn).

— Rudolph Antorcha —

Excellence, personal development, integrity, responsible stewardship, respect, and community are the well-known core values of Saint Leo University.

In 1898, during the beginning of the segregation era in the United States, Rudolph Antorcha became the first black American to be accepted into Saint Leo University.

At that time, it was illegal to teach black and white people in the same space. However, the Benedictine Monks of Saint Leo Abbey could not deny their values of respect, integrity, and community, so they welcomed Antorcha to the Saint Leo community.

In 2013, a bronze monument in honor of Rudolph Antorcha was built next to apartments 5 and 6, ensuring the enduring remembrance of the core values of the Saint Leo University.

—Maya Angelou—

Storyteller, civil rights activist, director, writer, and poet. Maya Angelou was a black American who overcame all the prejudice and racism in her surroundings to become an inspiration for women all over the United States.

Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1928, and since a young age she faced discrimination for being a black person, but she did not let that hide her from all her talent. Although Angelou had a broad career, she was best known for her poetry.

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” (1969) is Angelou’s most popular work, and in this autobiography, she fearlessly confronts the gender injustice of her era. Her writing talent is way beyond this brilliant piece, and she is recognized as a canon of African American literacy.

Angela also worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X during the civil rights movement. With that, she uses her persuasive writing skills to write and advocate about the struggles, resilience, and aspirations of African Americans.

—Jackie Robinson—

Jackie Robinson is a retired baseball player who broke the line by becoming the first African American to be part of the professional MLB while standing up for equal rights amid an era of racial segregation.

Starting in the Negro Leagues, Robinson played as a shortstop. It was at that time that Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers’ general manager, saw his potential and affirmed that he would be the black player who would integrate the major white leagues.

Still, Robinson faced huge racial repression; the white audience always treated Robinson with racial disrespect, regardless of his talent, but he kept presenting himself as an honorable and graceful man.

At the end of his first season, Robinson’s success was undeniable. He ended the season with an award from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America that acknowledged him as the winner of the inaugural.

Until Nowadays, on April 15 of each season, teams celebrate Jackie Robinson’s Day in honor of the impact Robinson made in baseball and American history.

Black History Month is almost over, but there are still some fun things to do to celebrate it in an educational way.

Trivia challenges about significant contributions and accomplishments made by African Americans are a good suggestion for students who want to test their knowledge about African American history.

Another way to celebrate Black History Month is by supporting their business. This is a simple but fun way to show gratitude to them.

One black business example, here in the Tampa Bay Area, is the 7th+Grove, a delicious and beautiful restaurant in Ybor City (40 minutes from campus).

Watching Black History movies and reading books are also great options for those who want to commemorate this month in a simple, but still meaningful, way.

There are many other ways you can celebrate Black History Month. Read the full article to find them out!
