The 56th Annual Saginaw African Cultural Festival is continuing through Sunday at the former Morley School grounds on Lapeer. This year’s theme is Imani, which means faith!

Vendors, entertainment, art, food, fashion and so much more will be available! It was a pleasure to have organizers in studio throughout the week promoting the family-friendly event.

☮️TODAY there is a rally for peace. These hot months have brought a lot of pain and sadness to families through gun violence. The peace rally is today (Sunday) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at New Standard Academy in Flint. 12-year-old Trinity Davis was shot and killed on July 16. Dominique Ward, 15, was killed on June 26. We’ve also reported non-deadly shootings this summer that have taken a toll on everyone, but especially the young victims. WNEM.com for details.

❤️‍🩹 As a newer member to this evening news team, I can only imagine what our longtime viewers and colleagues who’ve known David Custer TV much longer than me and who’ve watched his evolution as a reporter and anchor must be feeling. By now you’ve read his announcement. I see you, hear you and appreciate you. Thank you, first and foremost. I would be remiss to not acknowledge David’s impact within our community, our newsroom and the journalism industry as a whole. He is one of the greatest and a homegrown talent!

My only real issue with him is the fact that he doesn’t like hot drinks. How is this normal😹?

David is someone mid-Michigan and beyond knows as an award-winning journalist many times over. The work you see speaks for itself, but it is the intangibles he brings to the table that are an irreplaceable, invaluable and needed asset to our newsroom and community. He leads with a deep sense of humanity, ethics and care for the people around him while often under a bright spotlight that sometimes makes him susceptible to criticism. It’s something Meg, Chris and I understand working beside him each night, but I don’t think everyone does. It is, unfortunately, too easy to dismiss in a climate of frailty blanketing the news industry when it should be celebrated and embraced.

David has been a leader who has only welcomed and uplifted me since I started at WNEMTV5news.

I’m going to miss sitting next to him, the lighter moments, philosophical chats about the industry and so much more 😪.

I look forward to his next amazing chapter🥳. Thank you for your great taste in music, your love of orbit gum (because I can always steal a piece), giving me all of your free makeup brushes (and makeup removers when I run out), handwritten notes, being my personal pharmacist when sick, decades of service to this industry and your loyalty to TV5. God bless you, Dan and the whole fam.
