This week back in 1982:

MTV launched its "I Want My MTV" Campaign.

It was designed to get the network distributed and then to gain viewers once the channel was added to a cable system’s lineup.

Thus the “I Want My MTV” was born.

It was mishmash spot featured the most visually arresting artists and clips of the day: Talking Heads’ “Once In A Lifetime,” Pat Benatar’s “You Better Run,” Hall & Oates’ “Private Eyes,” the Police’s “Every Little Thing,” the Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up” and others. The spot ends with the slogan “You’ll never look at music the same way again.”

American filmmaker and film producer John Hughes initially envisioned the story of "Pretty in Pink" from the view point of a young man.

Not a young girl...

But after discussing his ideas with Molly Ringwald on the set of Sixteen Candles from 1984 he had a change of heart.

He developed the script with Molly in mind as the lead for Pretty in Pink.

It was late 1979 that Vince Clarke, Martin Gore & Andy Fletcher formed “Composition of Sound”

Vocalist Dave Gahan was asked to join shortly after Vince heard him perform a rendition of David Bowie’s “Heroes” at a local Scout hut jam session.

Flash forward to September in 1980.

The name of the band was changed.

Depeche Mode was born!
