In May 1990, San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein and Attorney General John Van De Kamp went head to head in the California Gubernatorial Primaries. Feinstein released this campaign ad against VDK.
Just years before his death, Van de Kamp gave an oral history interview: “To accuse me of being impervious to victims and so forth was mean and irresponsible... The Hillside Strangler case was always tough to explain… I think of the two or three things in my career that you’d like to do over again, certainly the Hillside Strangler decision. You know, it’s all hindsight, it was a principled decision at the time, but I would do that differently today.”
In case you missed it, our host Joe Rodota went on air with CapRadio's Vicki Gonzalez to talk about Hillside and the case. They spoke of Rodota's journey in making the podcast and cover key details of the case.
