Special Weather Statement issued January 29 at 2:17PM EST by NWS

An increased fire danger remains in effect for all of central North Carolina until 6 pm this evening. Conditions are currently indicating relative humidity levels in the 19 to 25 percent range, with wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph. In fact, Red Flag conditions are presently observed in some locations along the northern and northwest Piedmont to northern Coastal Plain. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Please refer to your local burn permitting authority on whether you can burn. If you do burn, use extreme caution and ensure that fire suppression equipment is readily available. Conditions will improve this evening as relative humidity levels increase and wind gusts subside.

Piedmont Community College President Announces Resignation

Piedmont Community College (PCC) announced today that Dr. Pamela G. Senegal, who has served as the collegeā€™s president since 2017, will be stepping down from her position, effective February 28, 2025.

Senegal shared her decision with the collegeā€™s Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students earlier this week, citing an opportunity to return home and focus on family.

ā€œIt has been the honor of my career to serve as president of Piedmont Community College,ā€ Senegal said. ā€œWorking alongside such talented and dedicated faculty and staff to support our students and advance the mission of this institution has been profoundly rewarding. While this decision was not an easy one, I am confident that PCC will continue to thrive and lead the way in providing high-quality education to our community.ā€

During President Senegalā€™s tenure, PCC has seen significant progress, including:

Ā· Best enrollments in a decade, serving more than 5,000 students annually.

Ā· New academic programs ā€“ EMT Paramedic, Public Service Administration, Engineering, Sonography, Licensed Practical Nursing and more.

Ā· Secured more than $30 million in new revenue for institution through grants, legislative allocations, and private donations over a three-year period.

Ā· Reduced equity gaps in student persistence and performance outcomes.

Ā· Procured 91,000 square foot facility in partnership with Person County elected officials for the institution.

Ā· Acquired an 80-acre facility for the institution from Caswell County elected officials for development of agricultural related programming.

Ā· Updated facilities ā€“ ADA projects completed, new entryway, enhanced exterior lighting.

Ā· Refreshed branding and social media presence.

Ā· Hardened IT infrastructure with significant investments in technology.

Ā· Increased fundraising and grant efforts ā€“ Pacer Promise program, largest individual gift ever received, National Science Foundation (NSF) finalist

The Board of Trustees will soon begin the search for a new president. An interim leader will be announced in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition.

Roxboro Police Dept: 11 AM Road Conditions

Here in the snow capital of the Triangle we woke up to a majestic winter wonderland with about 2-2.5 inches of snow. Its a beautiful day to stay home where it is warm. Thanks to our partners with DOT and City Crews working to clear roads, conditions are improving throughout Roxboro and Person County.

Main thoroughfares are in fair condition, with some caution for patches of ice and slush build up. The opposite road conditions exist on secondary roads and places in some of the more rural areas of Person County where many roads remain covered with snow and ice creating dangerous conditions.

We would encourage people to stay home until later this afternoon when temperatures will rise melting the snow and ice.

Thank you to all the first responders and road crews out working to keep our community safe. You are the heart and soul on days like today that makes Everything Better in Person.

ROXBORO POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE ļæ½
Stolen Vehicle Pursuit in Roxboro Hospitalizes Seven People
(Roxboro, NC) A vehicle pursuit Thursday afternoon in Roxboro ended with a sixteen-year-old in critical condition and six others hospitalized. According to police, 18 year-old Jamere Jones, of Roxboro, allegedly stole a 1999 Buick, from a business on Leasburg Road around 4 PM on Thursday afternoon. The owner of the vehicle reported the vehicle theft to law enforcement who found the vehicle within minutes. Police attempted to block the vehicle in a business parking lot to prevent it from fleeing, but before police could block the vehicle, Jones evaded police leading to a brief pursuit.

Speeds during the pursuit exceeded 60 mph in a 20 mph zone, before the Jones allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of South Main Street and Madison Boulevard, causing the stolen vehicle to be struck by a passenger truck, and two other vehicles. The crash entrapped Jones and two sixteen year-old passengers inside the vehicle. Emergency crews used the Jaws of Life to extricate one of the sixteen year-old passengers. Five people were transported the hospital with minor injuries. Jamere Jones was transported to the hospital with serious injuries in stable condition. One of the sixteen-year-old passengers in the stolen car driven by Jones was transported by Life Flight to the hospital, where they remain in critical condition with life threatening injuries.

Roxboro Police charged Jamere Jones with felony possession of a stolen vehicle and felony speed to elude arrest. Additional charges for Jones are expected. Roxboro Police requested the North Carolina State Highway Patrol to investigate the crash scene. Details of the crash remain under investigation.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Roxboro Police Tip Line at 336-322-6072.
