In order to protect ourselves from COVID-19, much of our lives and work have been pushed into virtual settings. Austin Community College’s spring 2021 commencement was no different and was also forced to be held virtually.

ACCENT wanted to check-in with students graduating during this unusual time, so we reached out to a pair of recent ACC graduates, Emily Pesina and Ashley Silva. ACCENT editor-in-chief, Pete Ramirez, spoke to both graduates to understand what their graduation experience was like and what they had planned for the near future.

Plastic Free July is a month-long campaign that aims to raise awareness about decreasing our society's use of plastics. And yes, it's now August but that doesn't mean we should stop thinking about our plastic consumption.

Take it from Holli Sampson, a sophomore geology major at ACC, who said, "Plastic Free July is great. It's a start, but we should all work together to become a plastic free society as much as we can.”

It's amazing to learn that each ACC campus has its own Green Teams, which are "collaborative student and faculty groups working towards the goal of increasing sustainability on our ACC campuses."

Now here are some ways 🌍YOU🌍 can be involved:

Student leader Holli Sampson has organized a trash pickup for students on April 25. "Students can find a space in their local community that needs to be cleaned and will receive a voucher for a free slice of pizza from Toss Pizzeria🍕 for their efforts."

Bringing this Gem✳️ back! Are you making these recycling mistakes?

In this earlier story, former ACCENT contributor Alexa Smith has gathered this list to make sure your recycling is the best it can be! Here are some tips from the story:

* Make sure grocery bags and plastic Amazon mailers, are not being recycled with Austin’s curbside pickup program. Instead, check out Austin’s “What Do I Do With?” page to find where to take these and other items.

*Rinse out your jars, bottles, milk jugs, etc. before tossing them into your recycling bin! The left over food residue can contaminate the entire batch of recycling and make it non-recyclable.

*FOIL! Recycle your Foil into a ball at least two inches wide, making sure no food residue is left over.

*Lastly, pizza boxes are unable to be recycled due to the amount of grease left on them. Unless if you've received a compost bin, keep those greasy pizza boxes out of the recycling bin!
