01/08/2024

Mercy Northwest Arkansas makes a meaningful advance forward with its mission to increase access to health care thanks to a $5 million gift from the Walmart Foundation to Mercy Health Foundation Northwest Arkansas. With the donation, Mercy intends to expand upon its growth plans, improving the reach of quality health care within the region.

“The Walmart Foundation’s generous gift to Mercy Health Foundation NWA is a significant step toward Mercy’s goal to enhance health care in Northwest Arkansas,” said Ryan Gehrig, president of Mercy Arkansas. “With this support, Mercy can offer new procedures and treatments that were previously out of reach. Eliminating the necessity for our patients to travel far away from their loved ones in times of need is central to our expansion, and we’re grateful to Walmart Foundation for its support to make health care better in our community.”

The Walmart Foundation’s gift enables Mercy NWA to purchase the latest medical technology, attract top-tier physicians and offer new services for those in the region.

One immediate impact of the gift is the construction of a new interventional radiology suite, which will feature the most up-to-date medical equipment, including a robot-controlled system that uses imaging techniques to show blood flow and guide minimally invasive treatments for various conditions. This new interventional radiology suite allows Mercy NWA to provide advanced treatments for which patients were previously forced to travel outside the region. According to Northwest Arkansas Council’s 2019 Health Care Report, our community loses approximately $950 million annually when patients leave for medical services and specialty care. This investment by the Walmart Foundation advances Mercy’s effort to reversing this trend, while meeting the needs of patients.

“The new interventional radiology suite will significantly enhance our ability to deliver advanced care right here in Northwest Arkansas,” said Dr. Jared Garrett, interventional radiologist at Mercy NWA. “Our team is excited about the new technology, which will help us to better serve our patients with less invasive procedures and improved outcomes.”

The rest of the Walmart Foundation’s gift will go to other Mercy NWA expansion plan projects, to be announced in the near future, all of which will help meet the growing health care needs of the booming population in Northwest Arkansas.

"We share a vision with Mercy Northwest Arkansas to help people live better lives. We are excited that this funding will help provide quality care by investing in medical professionals, specialty services and state-of-the art technology." said Kathleen McLaughlin, president, Walmart Foundation and executive vice president and chief sustainability officer, Walmart, Inc. "Investing in Mercy’s growth is an investment in the wellbeing for our families and neighbors in the growing Northwest Arkansas region."

Clark Ellison, vice president of Mercy Health Foundation Northwest Arkansas, highlighted the importance of community support. "The Walmart Foundation's support shows the power of working with community organizations for lasting change," Ellison said. "Together, we will strengthen access to quality health care, ensuring all families in Northwest Arkansas get the care they need."

As I sit here in a resort finally having the opportunity for a small family getaway, it’s not lost on me just how fast time slips by. We barely had time to squeeze this in as life with our two boys gets busier and busier. It seems like just yesterday we were finishing the school year … now it’s August, kids are headed back to the classroom and calendars are filling up once again. Almost like New Year’s, August brings a sense of new and starting over, somewhat, and I think I kinda love that. I always love a fresh start. Big fan of Mondays, shockingly, but don’t kid yourself, I love me a Friday! Speaking of Friday, this Friday (tomorrow) is Arkansas Children’s Northwest’s Gala of Hope. Sold out again, yes! But did you know that today and tomorrow mark the 30th anniversary of Will Golf 4 Kids?! Thirty years is a long time in the nonprofit golf tournament world, huge congrats to ACNW!

Toward the end of the month, we have the annual Northwest Arkansas Food Bank Jewels of Giving. If you haven’t had a chance to check out their new location in Lowell, do it … do it now! It’s beyond amazing and is going to assist in eradicating food insecurity in Northwest Arkansas. Quickly following that, yep, you guessed it, more golf! But not just any golf, it’s a 20th annual Golf 4 A Cause tournament at Pinnacle Country Club for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkoma … keep an eye out, you just might see Ronald himself!

Summer memories made, yes. Grateful heart, yes. Ready to work, one million percent yes! Let’s do this, Northwest Arkansas! Let’s show up and show out for all the amazing nonprofits in our area. Good luck to everyone getting all the kiddos ready for back to school and cheers to fresh starts!

11/07/2024

Today, NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) announced its new academic and athletic logos.

The new logos reflect the college’s desire to create a modern impression that aligns with the college’s innovative and forward-thinking initiatives.

“Each day, our college community breaks new barriers by introducing new ideas, programs, ways of learning, and so much more,” said Dr. Dennis C. Rittle, NWACC president. “We aspire to be a hub for innovation serving our community and students, and we believed it was vital our brand represented that.

“We want our brand to be something students can be proud of. President Rittle encouraged us to explore rebranding and has supported this project every step of the way,” said Grant Hodges, NWACC’s chief of staff and executive director of communications. “Amy Rodriguez has done a phenomenal job overseeing the rebranding as Director of Marketing and Creative Services.”

The new brand also includes new brand pillars, secondary logos, and new colors.

“With the implementation of athletics at NWACC, we have been given the opportunity to introduce athletic logos and branding for the NWACC Eagles,” said Brooke Brewer, NWACC’s athletic director. “This fresh identity is a mascot all of our students can wear with pride and reflects the spirit of our student body and community. Our athletic branding captures the energy, dedication, and fierceness of our student-athletes. We are excited to see student-athletes compete for NWACC in these bold new logos for years to come.”

“We wanted clean, modern logos that better reflected the college, our athletic program, and all that we strive to do for students and the community,” said Amy Rodriguez, NWACC’s marketing director. “The new academic logo is a modern take on our previous logo. It maintained a few elements from the past logo, such as dark green, circle, and tree elements. We wanted to keep some of the old logo so that we don’t lose the history of the college in our branding. Yet, the new branding has more energy and will move us better into the future.”

College officials worked with 25th Hour Communications, a marketing and public relations agency based in the United States. NWACC began the rebranding process in 2023.

Happy July! Did you know today is International Joke Day?! I did a quick Google search and found the cutest July jokes … What do ducks love about the Fourth of July?! Fire-Quackers! What did the flag do when it lost its voice?! It just waved! So innocent, so wholesome, so Americana … exactly what celebrating our Independence Day should be. I love July! July, to me, is all things summer: sunny days, evening ice cream runs, vacations, firing up the grill, splashing in the pool … the list goes on and on. Most responsibilities are literally “on holiday,” ha, and we can truly relax, unwind and enjoy each other’s company. Unlike my traditional notes, I’m going to keep this one short and sweet so you can go forth and enjoy the dog days of summer! Cheers to letting freedom ring! ❤️ 🇺🇸 💙

The Arkansas Children’s Northwest (ACNW) Auxiliary has committed $3 million to support the historic expansion initiatives at Arkansas Children’s Northwest.

Since its establishment in 2022, the ACNW Auxiliary, consisting of 130 dedicated members, has played a pivotal role in providing support to patients and families through various fundraising events and projects. During their June year-end meeting to commemorate the accomplishments of the 2024 fiscal year, Toni Lindsey, president of the auxiliary, proudly revealed that the auxiliary had achieved a record-breaking fundraising amount of $333,387.

Arkansas Children’s historic $318 million expansion will increase access to pediatric care, enhance exceptional outcomes for kids and elevate patient experience on both hospital campuses. The ACNW expansion will include added surgical space, more operating rooms, procedure rooms, hospital beds and additional clinic space.

As a grateful parent whose child received treatment at Arkansas Children's, Lindsey expressed her motivation for engaging in this vital work and expressed gratitude for the dedicated support of ACNW Auxiliary members, officers and the northwest Arkansas community.

"Witnessing the exceptional care and support my child received at Arkansas Children's inspired me to give back and ensure that other families have access to the same level of care,” Lindsey said. "Thank you for your determination and for going above and beyond for Arkansas Children’s. We have a team of volunteers who are passionate about child health and give of themselves every day to help create a healthier tomorrow for our children.”

The ACNW Auxiliary's dedication to fundraising has been instrumental in supporting initiatives such as the Miracles and Magic Radiothon, a la Carte, Teddy Bear Tea and My Bright Star. These events have raised essential funds and brought joy and comfort to the children and families receiving care at Arkansas Children's Northwest while fostering a strong sense of community in the area.

"We are incredibly grateful for the ACNW Auxiliary volunteers and the entire community for their commitment to improving child health in northwest Arkansas," said Fred Scarborough, executive vice president and chief communications development officer for Arkansas Children's. "Thanks to your support, Arkansas Children’s is committed to being right-sized for the community providing expert pediatric care in Arkansas and across the region."

From its founding as an orphanage in 1912 to becoming a nationally acclaimed pediatric health care system, Arkansas Children's has remained steadfast in its commitment to being a champion for children.
