Hey friends! I'm in the process of going through two decades of my business projects and streamlining everything. I have multiple pages, websites, and a radio show to merge so those resources will be in a new and improved format. Plus, I'll be doing more with video for those who prefer to learn that way.

I've set a goal to sell 500 copies of my books this year and those babies won't sell themselves. :-) That means I'll be doing more speaking and writing this year than I've done in awhile. I'm excited about helping others build a personal brand and lifelong business relationships.

Cheers to a great 2023!

When I work with political candidates, it is important to understand the campaign rules. I currently only work with candidates in Arkansas. We are close to the primary and I'm an active voter so get a lot of political mail.

If you want to tell who funded and sent the mailing, you look at the line of text that says, "Paid for by ____." Knowing this can help you sort out the political action committees who are supporting the opposing candidate and may create the appearance that the candidate is involved in mud-slinging.

From a graphic design perspective, this is a very hard rule to follow, particularly in terms of social media where you are posting graphics and Facebook is restricting your text to 20% of the image area. But at the very least, it should be on every printed material or anything that is mailed or used in advertising. I attend a lot of political events so I see a lot of literature and it doesn't always happen. It can be a real black eye if some opponent wants to take a candidate to task on in.

Here is how the law reads in Arkansas:
The state election code requires that all “articles, statements, or communications appearing in any newspaper printed or circulated in this state intended or calculated to influence the vote of any elector in any election and for the publication of which a consideration is paid or to be paid shall clearly contain the words ‘Paid Political Advertisement’, ‘Paid Political Ad’, or ‘Paid for by’ the candidate, committee, or person who paid for the message,” and also that all “articles, statements, or communications appearing in any radio, television, or any other electronic medium intended or calculated to influence the vote of any elector in any election and for the publication of which a consideration is paid or to be paid shall clearly contain the words: (a) ‘Paid political advertisement’ or ‘paid political ad’; or (b) ‘Paid for by’, ‘sponsored by’, or ‘furnished by’ the true sponsor of the advertisement.” [A.C.A. §7-1-
103(7)]

I'm working with a candidate right now who has an opponent who has sent a ridiculous amount of mailings and not one displays the "Paid for by ___" language. All but one amateur-looking mailer in support of the candidate arrived with the same direct-mail permit.

I wish I knew who their graphic designer was because I'd pull them aside and school them before they get their candidates in real trouble. Folks, that's what differentiates the professionals from a friend's son who just finished graphic design school. I know graphic designers have to start somewhere but causing a candidate to violate campaign rules is not the right way to build your portfolio. Do your homework -- graphic designs and candidates.
