Forget the water cooler. What's the talk on the dock??

The word on the docks is that Southports deliver a stable, dry ride with great speed and fuel economy. As one customer said, the Southport ride is “radically different—soft, aggressive, and responsive.”

Thanks to a stable of center-console models ranging from 27 to 33 feet, Southport Boats in South Gardiner, Maine, has carved out a hard-won reputation among the serious fishing crowd for legendary performance.

Poster Reveal! We are excited to share the poster for the 2025 Maine Boat & Home Show. The painting by Rockport-based artist, Stephen Florimbi, depicts a classic Maine coastal scene – a colorful, busy harbor with a variety of boats exploring the surrounding waters. Stephen is a true jack-of-all trades who has worked as a boatbuilder, carpenter, and forester but now focuses full-time on his art. We are so glad to have Stephen's work represent the Maine Boat & Home Show as it truly exemplifies the most wonderful aspects of life on the coast. Irish eyes were smiling last summer at the Apprenticeshop in Rockland as the boatbuilding school finished work on two historic Irish one-designs, with the launching a Dublin Bay 24 sloop named ZEPHRA, and a 13-foot Water Wag sailing dinghy. After a handful of speeches, and a ceremonial pouring of champagne, Zephra slipped into Rockland Harbor and motored to the Apprenticeshop’s dock where proud owner Espey glowed as he sat in the cockpit holding the long tiller, one of those few remnants of the original boat. “The boat is like a 6-meter with a proper draft and a proper beam,” he said. “It really is a beauty.”

Much of Zephra’s planking, laminated frames, and backbone are sipo mahogany. The deck is plywood with a teak overlay, Carney said. The classic white interior includes a small galley, with a sink, stove, fridge, and portable head. Zephra is powered by a 14-hp Yanmar diesel.

Mildred's War- this Maine artist lived, and painted, through both World War's. Local to Portland and Kennebunkport her art portrayed the shipyards, medical artistry, and was able to pioneer a program at the U.S. Army’s Halloran Hospital on Staten Island with her sister that encouraged recovery through art based programs sponsored by the New York Chapter of the American Red Cross, in cooperation with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1946 Mildred became inspired by Jackson Pollack and produced these abstracts through to 1980 when she was in her 90's.

🌊 Tiny Buoys, Big Impact in Camden Harbor
By collecting hyper-local wave and wind data, two small yellow buoys in Camden Harbor are helping scientists predict the future.

These solar-powered “spotter buoys” are part of a cutting-edge storm modeling project led by researcher Julia Hopkins. The goal? Create a “virtual Camden Harbor” to help town leaders make data-informed decisions that protect the waterfront from increasingly destructive storms.

📍 Real-time data from inside and outside the harbor
📊 Used to simulate how future storms will impact Camden
🛠️ Will guide decisions like whether to install breakwaters or wave attenuators
💡 Funded by $90,000 in local donations
📅 Final report coming this summer!

With storms getting stronger and seas rising, projects like this give coastal towns like Camden the tools to protect what matters most.

🚤 Keeping it Simple with Maggie-Ann
Built by hand. Driven by tradition. Powered by soul.

The Maggie-Ann, launched last fall at Billings Marine in Stonington, is a true work of art—a 33' plank-on-frame wooden lobster boat brought to life by Peter Buxton for a discerning Port Clyde owner. No frills. No fluff. Just an elegant sheer, a big Cummins diesel, and classic lines that stop you in your tracks.

🛠️ Inspired by a Peter Kass model
📐 Finalized at Brooklin Boat Yard
⚓ Built by hand over 13 months
🖤 Painted with Kirby’s marine enamel in "bronze green"
📍 Traditional style meets modern function with a 21” Garmin chart plotter, bronze hardware, and just enough technology to keep her smart without losing her soul.

Want to see how she was built, plank by plank? Head to Off Center Harbor to watch the full 15-part video series on her construction. The process, and the videos, are fascinating.

"As a professional photographer, I tend to always shoot for the client. But the best part of working in Maine is that I’m still able to capture something that gives me fulfillment. The state has natural beauty that’s unrivaled and there is always something new to see. I enjoy the search for a composition that not only answers the client’s needs but brings joy to me. During the winter months I can go from landscape to action photography all in the same day; add another season and we start over! Maine offers a sense of awe and beauty while also a glimpse into the harsh realities of nature. Capturing these moments presents our state to a global audience for all to see."

A good heads up for park bound visitors.

A good heads up for park bound visitors.

Beginning April 15, Acadia National Park will transition to a fully cashless fee system and mobile payments, credit cards, or debit cards at park sales outlets for entrance fees. Visitors who are only able to pay with cash may purchase a park pass from one of nine local third-party vendors.

Cash sales represent less than 5% of in person sales in the park. During peak season, Acadia’s rangers spend up to eight and a half hours per day documenting, reporting, and transferring cash receipts. Moving to a cashless system will reduce the amount of time park staff spend managing cash and increase their availability to collect fees, increasing the amount of fee revenue available to support critical projects and visitor services.

03/14/2025

Marine industry marketing and communications veteran Kate Holden has been named Show Manager for the 2025 Maine Boat & Home Show, which returns to the Rockland waterfront August 8 to 10.

Holden brings more than 25 years of experience working for a range of companies, from small Maine-based businesses to large international associations and companies, including a 13-year stint on the executive management team for IBEX, an international trade event that serves the North American recreation marine industry. At IBEX she oversaw the company’s overall brand development, marketing and communications strategy, analytics and reporting, and managed a team of internal and external vendors and colleagues.

The Maine Boat & Home Show, a production of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine, is a celebration of life on the coast.“We’re excited that Kate’s joining our team well ahead of this year’s show,” said Ted Ruegg, owner and publisher of MBH&H. “She brings the skills and energy needed to put on a topnotch event, and her deep connections to Maine’s waterfront industries will be vital in helping us attract a diverse range of exhibitors to the state’s only in-water boat show and expo of coastal lifestyle companies.”

“I look forward to working with Maine boatbuilders and craftspeople to create an engaging event that celebrates our coastal lifestyle,” Holden said. “This unique opportunity allows me to bring my experience in the industry back home to the coast of Maine to benefit the people and businesses here. As I navigate the next few months, I look forward to meeting the people involved in this annual show.”

Holden grew up in Brooklin, Maine, the self-proclaimed “Boat Building Capital of the World.” She spent her childhood there, playing on the beaches and in the ocean, before going on to earn degrees in ecology, marketing, and media studies from the University of Maine and the University of Southern Maine. She began her professional career at WoodenBoat Publications, where she worked in circulation, advertising sales, marketing, and show management.

Now a Portland resident, Holden currently serves on the American Boat and Yacht Council’s Board of Directors. In her spare time, she enjoys cruising Penobscot Bay with her partner, Aaron, in their 34-foot Webbers Cove lobsterboat, Runaway. She still enjoys beaches and swimming in the ocean, loves to travel, and teaches yoga in her free time.

The Maine Boat & Home Show held on the waterfront in downtown Rockland since 2003, is a showcase of new and used boats, marine gear, fine arts, jewelry, furniture, crafts, food, and family fun. It attracts thousands of visitors annually to Midcoast Maine.

For attendee and exhibitor information, contact Holden via email at [email protected] or visit maineboats.com/boatshow. She can also be reached at 207-632-7369.
