WLUV will officially be signing off the radio on November 30. 👋 It's bittersweet to share that WLUV was purchased by VCY America who will officially take over the station December 1st.
There's a lot of history in this old radio station of ours. Angelo (aka Papa Joe) Salvi formed WLUV radio back in 1962. It was Rockford’s first country western radio station, where country music lovers could hear Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Dolly Parton along with many others. Then in 1968, Joe got the license for 96.7 FM where again, he was the first to play Rockford’s coolest black soul music! Then in 2015 he obtained the license for 105.3 FM. He also brought listeners Harlem High School games live, NASCAR racing and St. Louis Cardinals games. The best part about WLUV is that it was the training ground for so many young DJs in the area.
Joe passed away January 28, 2020 and at that time Joe’s sister, Kay Rinaldi entrusted Sue Salvi Buckwalter (Joe’s niece) to serve as the administrator of the station. Sue opted to keep the station running and continued to employ Virgie Lameyer who has 50 plus years of service and Buddy Stevens who worked for WLUV for over 20 years!
In August 2020, Sue automated and changed the format to the best of the 60’s and 70’s. She updated the radio station building while continuing to maintain the 50 year relationship with NASCAR racing. In addition, she and Liz Wylder partnered to promote community and not for profit events thru the Sunday morning show “LUV Beats”.Joe’s former DJs; such as Tim Larson and Chuck Doyle came to the aid of Sue advising her on programming. They had a blast reliving the good old days and playing tunes from back in their era.
We want to thank you all for listening and for your support! We have LUVed hearing from you.💜
