The Rockdale Reporter The Rockdale Reporter, which dates back to 1873, is actually a year older than the town of Rockdale which didn’t get its name until 1874.

The Cooke family bought the newspaper in 1911 and the family still owns the award-winning weekly newspaper.

February is and we’re honoring remarkable Black figures who have made a lasting impact on the Rockdale community and beyond. This week, we are celebrating Mrs. Elizabeth Galloway-McQuitter, a trailblazer in women’s basketball and a champion for equality in sports. 🏀✨

Born and raised in Rockdale, TX, Mrs. Galloway-McQuitter broke barriers in women’s basketball, becoming a pioneer for female athletes. From playing at a newly integrated junior high to making history in the first professional women’s basketball league (WBL), she paved the way for women in sports. She later coached at multiple universities, including Texas A&M, and led Rockdale High back to state for the first time since she played there. In 2018, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, where she is currently serving her second term on the Board.

Now, as president of Legends of the Ball, Inc. she continues to inspire and empower young athletes by sharing the history and impact of the WBL.
