The Sedalia (MO) Fire Department covers the city of Sedalia with 39 paid full-time firefighters and four administrative staff operating out of two stations with two engines, an aerial ladder, a light rescue/medical response unit, and a rescue/emergency medical response (EMS) truck. When the department needed to replace an older pumper, it decided to go with its second rear-mount and chose Spartan Emergency Response to build the rig.

“In the past, we had been a top-mount pumper department,” observes Sedalia deputy chief Daniel Shaw. “Our first rear-mount pumper was a Rosenbauer, and we decided to stay with that type of pumper for several reasons.”

Nick Hummel, director of sales for Spartan Emergency Response, says Sedalia’s new pumper is built on a Spartan Metro Star chassis with a long four door (LFD) cab and 10-inch raised roof, and a severe duty interior with seating for six firefighters, five of them in H.O. Bostrom self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) seats with IMMI SmartDoc brackets.

Perlman Architects of Arizona collaborated with Architects West on the design and building of Richland (WA) Fire Department Station 76 in the Southwestern region of the city, the fourth station built for Richland and the seventh collaboration between the two firms. The fire department marked the grand opening of Station 76 late in September with the uncoupling of two fire hoses instead of a traditional ribbon cutting.

Mike Van Beek, Richland Fire’s battalion chief, pointed out that Station 76 is an expansion station for the department. Van Beek says that before the new station opened, the closest fire station had about a 10 minute response time to the area. “Station 76 is part of a 30 acre regional park located between Trowbridge Boulevard and Bella Coola Lane, where the planned development now has 1,000 out of an anticipated 5,000 homes,” Van Beek notes. “Perlman and Architects West did a great job on the design of the station, with the architecture of the building looking like it’s always been there.”
