This day in history: The US Army debuted its new slogan, “An Army of One,” on an episode of the sitcom, “Friends.” The slogan, which replaced “Be All You Can Be,” was short lived. It was soon discarded and replaced by the current, “Army Strong.” I, for one, never understood “An Army of One.” I believe the message was supposed to be that the Army fights as one team, but the slogan seemed to convey the opposite message, that the Army is comprised of individuals. What do you think?

I loved talking to Virginia about her experience as the first woman lawyer in Riverside County and her staunch support for our veterans. The thumbnail is a photo of Virginia with her father, John.

This is my favorite quote from the interview.

Virginia described her father as the most "non malicious chauvinist you ever wanted to meet." Virginia is a criminal defense attorney. She tells a touching story about her dad. "I had often joked that my parents were the world's greatest prosecution jurors. Until one day one of my father's friends said to him, 'John, how did you ever let your daughter become a criminal defense attorney.' Daddy looked at him and pointed his finger at him and he said, 'You listen to me. I put my life on the line on the USS Franklin, and my fellow sailors gave their lives protecting these freedoms that my daughter defends.' "
And I thought, 'Daddy, you do understand.'"
