Innovative Maternal Health Solutions for PPH in South Sudan

A comprehensive postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) intervention package was successfully implemented in six maternity facilities across South Sudan. This initiative integrated heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) for PPH prevention and tranexamic acid (TXA) for treatment, addressing challenges in cold-chain dependency and resource limitations.

The stepwise approach showed significant results: HSC replaced oxytocin as the primary uterotonic for PPH prevention, and TXA became a standard for treatment. Providers gained skills through hands-on training and collaborative platforms, improving PPH detection and management. This model highlights the feasibility of scaling similar interventions in low-resource humanitarian settings.

Advancing Maternal Health in India with Heat-Stable Carbetocin

The introduction of heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) in public health facilities in Madhya Pradesh through a public-private partnership demonstrated its feasibility for preventing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). This innovative approach addressed challenges like oxytocin's cold chain dependency, ensuring safe and effective PPH prevention.

Across 15 health facilities, nearly universal use of uterotonics was observed, with HSC administered in over 96% of cases. The initiative highlighted significant knowledge improvements among providers and better adherence to active management of the third stage of labor (AMTSL). The project shows promise for scaling HSC adoption across India to reduce maternal mortality.

Empowering Midwives in Fragile Settings with Advanced PPH Training

Midwives in humanitarian contexts are at the forefront of maternal health, often managing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) with limited resources. A new training model, incorporating heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) and tranexamic acid (TXA), has improved provider knowledge, skills, and confidence in PPH prevention and treatment.

This approach uses a low-dose, high-frequency (LDHF) strategy, combining webinars, in-person workshops, and hands-on skill drills. Participants reported significant knowledge gains and practical improvements, emphasizing midwifery leadership, teamwork, and quality care. Action plans and WhatsApp-based communities further strengthened collaboration and sustainability.

Innovative Solutions for Maternal Health in Resource-Limited Settings

Heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) has emerged as a reliable solution for preventing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in humanitarian contexts, favored by healthcare providers for its efficacy and lack of cold-chain requirements. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has also proven effective for PPH treatment, though its application remains limited by fewer cases requiring its use.

Addressing challenges like medication confusion and insufficient record-keeping, initiatives such as WhatsApp-based communities and hands-on training have strengthened provider collaboration and skills. These measures are paving the way for improved maternal health outcomes in resource-limited and fragile settings.

Improving PPH Care in Ugandaโ€™s Humanitarian Settings with Heat-Stable Carbetocin and Tranexamic Acid

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a critical concern in humanitarian settings, often compounded by unreliable cold-chain systems. A study in Uganda explored a phased implementation of heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) and tranexamic acid (TXA) in six health facilities. This innovative approach included training, collaborative platforms, and visual aids for care protocols.

HSC became the primary uterotonic in later phases, reducing reliance on oxytocin, while TXA was moderately adopted for PPH treatment. The results demonstrate the feasibility of integrating these interventions in fragile contexts, emphasizing the need for continuous capacity building and supportive supervision.

Transforming Maternal Health with Heat-Stable Carbetocin in Nigeria

In Nigeria, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a leading cause of maternal deaths often exacerbated by the suboptimal quality of uterotonics like oxytocin and misoprostol. A study across three states introduced heat-stable carbetocin (HSC), a uterotonic that remains effective without refrigeration, as a safer and more reliable alternative for PPH prevention.

HSC was used in 56% of deliveries, with healthcare providers reporting high acceptance due to its efficacy, ease of administration, and reduced side effects. Structured training, mentoring, and improved supply chain management were key enablers for the successful adoption of HSC in these facilities.

Heat-Stable Carbetocin Enhances Maternal Health Care in Kenya

In Kenya, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains a leading cause of maternal deaths, with unreliable cold chain systems hindering the use of oxytocin for prevention. The introduction of heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) in 39 public sector hospitals across 10 counties has demonstrated its feasibility and acceptability in overcoming these challenges.

The initiative involved training healthcare providers, improving PPH protocols, and enhancing awareness of HSCโ€™s benefits, including its ease of use and storage without refrigeration. Policymakers supported its adoption, highlighting its potential to address cold chain issues and improve PPH prevention in resource-limited settings.

Improving Maternal Health with Life-Saving Medicines in Sub-Saharan Africa

A pilot program in five Sub-Saharan African countries successfully introduced heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) prevention and tranexamic acid (TXA) for treatment. Both medicines were safely and effectively used in routine care, offering a practical solution to reducing maternal mortality in the region.

Heat-stable solutions like HSC, combined with structured training and improved access, can address the challenges of cold chain dependency and medicine shortages, advancing maternal health outcomes.

End-to-End Solutions for Improving Access to Life-Saving Maternal Health Medicines

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face a disproportionate burden of maternal deaths, with postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) as the leading cause. Despite the proven effectiveness of heat-stable carbetocin (HSC) and tranexamic acid (TXA) in PPH prevention and treatment, systemic and regulatory challenges hinder their widespread use. A recent study emphasizes the importance of structured end-to-end (E2E) strategies to bridge gaps in access and ensure these life-saving interventions reach those who need them most.
