Imperial group as Mars and Venus

The male figure is a portrait of Emperor Hadrian, the female figure was reworked into a portrait of Annia Lucilla. Marble, Roman artwork, ca. 120–140 AD, reworked ca. 170–175 AD.
Dimensions: H: 173 cm / Louvre

This group, created in 120-140 AD, originally depicted Hadrian as Mars and Vibia Sabina as Venus. It was altered in 170-175 to make Mars’ features less specific, and to depict Lucilla, wife of Lucius Verus, as Venus.

Obruk Kızören Obruk Han, a 13th Century CE, Seljuk Caravanserai, located within borders of Karatay district, Türkiye.

Caravanserais were roadside inns along major trade routes like the ancient Silk Road, that doubled as hubs for the exchange of goods, ideas and culture.

Celtic Iron Age raven totem helmet from a royal tomb in Ciumeşti, Satu Mare, Romania (northern Dacia), dated around the 4th Century BC.

It was most probably a ceremonial helmet as the wings of the bird flap as the wearer moves around.

Ostrich Fan of Tutankhamun

New Kingdom, late 18th Dynasty, ca. 1332-1323 BC.
From the Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62).
Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 62000

This ceremonial fan of Tutankhamun originally held ostrich feathers, it is made of wood covered with sheets of gold and inlaid with colored glass, turquoise, lapis lazuli, carnelian, and translucent calcite. The handle is inset with gold bands at intervals.

The palm of the fan is decorated with the king’s twin cartouches, which are protected by vultures wearing the White and Red Crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt, respectively. Several signs are represented: “Was” symbolizing “dominion”; the Shen, symbolizing “eternity”; the “Nebu,” meaning “gold”; and Pet, for “sky.”

800 years ago at All Saints Church in Hereford, England, a skillful carpenter carved this gentleman high up in the dark roof where nobody could see him. Five years ago they built an extra floor with bright lights for a restaurant.

The Lion of Kea, island of Kea, Greece :

Lion of Kea (6th Century BC), a gigantic archaic sculpture of a guardian lion, chiselled from a single block of local limestone. Very little is known about this 9m long sculpture, which even today stands in situ near village of Ioulida.
